 Question from Kim: Jesus, I received the following letter in response to the first discourses on Mother Teresa (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3) and I was hoping you could shed further light on the death consciousness and how to overcome it.

Dear Kim, I wish to thank you and Jesus for the profound comments on Mother Teresa’s book and life. I had so many ‘aha’ experiences and insights from these discourses, as never before from any other discourse.
Most of all, for the first time I found a description of the death consciousness I’ve been carrying for all my life. As far back as I can remember, I had this desire to die. When I didn’t have idea of the spiritual path, it was a thought of a suicide, but since I found the spiritual path, it’s been this desire of a ‘total cessation of being’, as Jesus describes it. It’s not truly a desire, except in my darkest moments, it’s more like an idea that I wouldn’t mind ceasing to be totally, because then I wouldn’t know I ever existed, and I wouldn’t need to strive and suffer anymore. I mean, who wants to live forever, if this is all there is to life. I have no conflict in myself about this, I can see this ‘thought’ quite peacefully within me. It’s just when I feel truly lacking of purpose and love that this idea becomes a strong desire. I’ve tried to describe this to people, but nobody seems to understand what I mean, so it was a relief to see it described so clearly.
Now, I do not know whether this is my own consciousness or whether I took on some of the collective consciousness. But if it can be of service to God’s creation, I really would like to overcome this consciousness. I just don’t know how. Jesus and other Masters keep talking about the Oneness with them and with God, but I never understood what this really means. I know with my outer mind that I am God and that I am one with the Masters, lately I’ve been seeing them inside myself and not outside, but I still think I don’t quite understand what ‘being One’ truly means.
Again, I thank you and Jesus for your comments. Reading that Mother Teresa doesn’t need to incarnate on earth anymore, despite the fact that she did not overcome this consciousness, gives me great hope.

Answer from ascended master Jesus through Kim Michaels:

I am indeed very willing to comment on the death consciousness as it affects millions of people on earth, often having the effect of depriving them of the joy of living. In many cases it even drives them toward the illusion that killing the physical body will give them the cessation of consciousness and thus end their suffering—which, of course, is not the case since consciousness survives the death of the body.

It was indeed this state of consciousness that I was talking about when I said:

I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly. (John 10:10)

In other words, I came to this planet for the purpose of freeing people from the death consciousness. Take note of what I am saying here. I did NOT come to save people physically. I came to free them from the consciousness that keeps them from salvation.

It is a somewhat dualistic idea to create a scale for the purpose of comparing one thing to another. Thus, I am reluctant to say that the consciousness of death is the hardest of all dualistic illusions to overcome—for I know how the dualistic mind will use such a statement. Nevertheless, the consciousness of death is, so to speak, the original illusion that separated self-aware beings from their source and their spiritual teachers. Thus, all other dualistic illusions spring from and build upon this illusion, which means that it is the most subtle of all illusions. And this, naturally, makes it rather difficult to overcome, which is why even a mature lifestream like Mother Teresa was not able to shake it off.

Yet please be alert and realize how the death consciousness itself will immediately use this statement to discourage YOU from even trying: “There, you see, if even someone as great as Mother Teresa could not overcome this, who are you to think that YOU can do it? Just give up and sink into the peace of death!”

The reality is that Mother Teresa – as I explained in the previous discourse – had specific illusions that she was not willing to question. So if you are more willing to question your personal illusions – and the death consciousness comes in many clever disguises – you can indeed overcome what Mother Teresa did not overcome. (As I also said, her struggles did indeed help lighten the planetary load – although not in the way she thought with her conscious mind – and this has made it easier for others to throw off this yoke—so her work was not wasted.)

In fact, the entire concept that one person is better or more capable than another is an outcome of the death consciousness. For when you see everything with the light of Christ, you see that the core of every self-conscious being is the Conscious You, which is an individualization of the Creator’s own Being. Thus, it makes no sense whatsoever that one individualization of God could have abilities that another individualization of God does not have. What one has done, all can do—when the all realize that they came from the ONE. Or, as we say in The Art of Non-war, how can one expression of infinity be more than another expression of infinity?

Now let me comment on the question raised above: “But if it can be of service to God’s creation, I really would like to overcome this consciousness. I just don’t know how.”

Well, it most certainly will be of immense service to God’s creation if people who have taken on the death consciousness overcome it and then show others how to do the same. The importance of this can hardly be overstated.

How do you overcome the death consciousness? It is very simple. You overcome the death consciousness the same way you overcome every other illusion: By seeing that it is an illusion!

How do you overcome an illusion? By questioning the dualistic beliefs that created the illusion—by questioning what the illusion itself portrays as unquestionable.

To help you get started, I will now throw a completely radical and revolutionary idea at you, and I am asking you to be very alert to what thoughts arise as you read this idea.

What does it actually mean to be saved, reach enlightenment, make your ascension or whatever you want to call the end goal of human striving? What is the secret of life, the hidden key behind the fact that most religions known on earth have talked about the need to strive for salvation?

The secret is that you will NOT be saved until you come to the point of realizing that you do not need to be saved because THE ENTIRE CONCEPT THAT YOU NEED TO BE SAVED IS AN ILLUSION, A CLEVERLY CRAFTED LIE!!!

Now consider some of the thoughts that came up in your mind as you read that statement. And now consider the reality: ALL of those thoughts came from the death consciousness itself and they serve only one purpose: TO KEEP YOU TRAPPED IN THE DEATH CONSCIOUSNESS INDEFINITELY!!!

Yes, I know you can come up with all kinds of clever arguments against my statement, but let us just step back and look at the big picture. Let us perform a reality check.

What would you say about a drop of water in the ocean who believes it is separated from the ocean by an impenetrable barrier or even believes that the ocean does not exist? Well, since the ocean is finite in size, it is possible that a drop can be separated from the ocean, but now imagine that the ocean is infinite in size, that there is nothing but the ocean. How could the drop be separated from something that is everywhere?

Most religions, and certainly Christianity, claim that God is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent. This is reflected in the Gospel of John, “Without him was not any thing made that was made.” Or as we say through these teachings, everything is made from the Ma-ter Light, which is made from the Creator’s own Being and consciousness. In other words, the very fact that you exist, that you have self-awareness, actually proves that you cannot be separated from God, for anything that exists – that was made – is made from God’s energy, Being and consciousness.

When you contemplate this, you see that logically you cannot be separated from God in reality. The appearance of separation can ONLY be an illusion. Thus, it is simply not correct that you are actually separated from God or that there is an impenetrable barrier or an uncross-able chasm between you and God’s kingdom. If God is everywhere, how can you find a place where God is not? If the kingdom of God is everywhere, how could you be outside the kingdom.

The logical consequence is that the sense of being separated from God’s kingdom can ONLY be an illusion. Which means that the concept that you need to be saved by entering the kingdom is also an illusion. The key to being free from the sense of separation is to awaken from the illusion. Thus, the key to being saved is to awaken from the illusion that you need to be saved by seeing that you were never actually separated from God. You thought you were separated from God because you had come to believe in the illusion that God’s kingdom was outside yourself. The key to overcoming this illusion is to realize the truth in my statement that the kingdom of God is within you.

This process of awakening must – inescapably – take place where the illusion is found, namely inside your mind. Which is precisely why I said that the kingdom does not come by observing an outer religion because the kingdom of God is within you. You “enter” God’s kingdom by discovering – within your mind – that you were never actually outside the kingdom—you had only been fooled into thinking you were outside. You “enter” by finally accepting that you are already in the kingdom because the kingdom is everywhere.

Yes, I know that while this sounds logical, it makes it no easier for most people to escape from the illusion. But it sets a foundation that we will now build upon.

How can self-aware beings come to feel that they are separated from God’s kingdom? Because they have been given imagination and free will. Thus, they can use their imagination to build a mental image – or accept an image made by others – and they can use their will to accept that image as being more real than reality.

To fully understand this, you must understand that everything is made from energy and that your mind has the capacity to use energy in ways most people do not understand. Every thought and emotion you have “qualifies” energy with a particular vibration and it imposes a mental image on the energy, causing it to take on a particular pattern or matrix. And as science says, energy cannot be created or destroyed (at least not by the human mind) so once mental energy is qualified with a particular vibration, it stays in that vibration and pattern.

So the reason why the illusion of separation seems to persuasive on earth is that for a very long time billions of people have reinforced the belief in separation, thus adding to the “weight” of the energy qualified by this belief and all the fear, anger and other negative emotions that spring from it. This collectively created consciousness surrounds this planet like a black energy cloud, and it affects every individual being living within it, pulling on their minds and feelings. The consequence is that when you are born in a physical body, you inevitably enter the energy field, and since you were brought up in a culture that is based on the illusion of separation, you come to believe in this illusion.

What I am trying to help you see here is that the end goal of all spiritual growth – the master key to salvation – is that you must awaken from the illusion of separation. And theoretically, you can awaken from this illusion at any moment—including right NOW!

I am well aware that there are some spiritual teachers who have talked about this and who have basically told their followers that they just need to wake up—which in most cases simply doesn’t work. The reason is, as Mother Mary and Maitreya explain in their books,  that over time you have picked up many illusions that spring from the consciousness of separation and you have come to accept them as truth. You have also misqualified energy that has accumulated in your energy field and you have made karma with other people. All of this pulls on your conscious mind and, depending on the strength of the pull, can make it very difficult for you to wake up from the illusion.

That is why we present people with the concept of a path that will gradually lessen the pull on your mind, taking you progressively closer to the point where your conscious mind has the ultimate “Aha experience” and realizes that separation is an illusion. Yet take note of that the true path is NOT an outer path. No matter how elaborate the outer rituals you observe, it will not automatically give you the breakthrough. That is why I said that the kingdom does not come with observation. Breaking through is a creative process, and only YOU can turn the dial of consciousness until you see the world in a totally different light than before.

So I am not hereby trying to say that every person who reads this can or should wake up instantly and be free from the illusion of separation. Yet what I AM saying is that every person who reads this has the potential to partially wake up by realizing with the logical mind that what I am saying makes sense. Once you realize this, it will become much easier for you to walk the path of overcoming the death consciousness AND the false path to “salvation” that has been created from the death consciousness. It will become much easier for the Conscious You to realize it is more than the death consciousness and thus separate itself from that illusion. This will make it much less painful for you to follow the path, as I will explain next.

Why is there a false path to salvation, what I called the broad way that leads to destruction? As Maitreya explains in greater detail, certain beings have become so trapped in the consciousness of death that they seek to pull all other beings into it. Most of these beings are simply blinded by the illusion, but there are a few among them who are actually aware that separation is an illusion, but in their pride they are trying to prove God wrong by pulling all other beings into the illusion.

These beings know that awakening from the illusion is just a matter of flipping a switch in your mind—as you flip a light switch to make the darkness disappear from a room. So in order to prevent people from flipping that switch, they had to create a false path that makes people believe they are on the ONLY road to salvation while actually never getting closer to the point of awakening.

The creation of this false path – that promises salvation while NEVER being able to deliver – is actually the most dangerous effect of the death consciousness. I came to earth precisely to help people see the fallacy of this “broad way” so they could discover the “strait and narrow way” that truly does lead to the kingdom by awakening you from the illusion that the kingdom is somewhere outside of you, somewhere else. Thus, everyone – including Mother Teresa – who volunteered to take on the death consciousness have as part of their mission to help awaken people from the false path—which, naturally, means you have to start by awakening yourself by removing the beam from your own eye. And this requires you to understand why the false path is so seductive.

The very foundation for the false path is that it promises you a solution to a problem that does not exist—at least not outside your mind. In other words, it promises you a real solution, but since the problem is not real, the solution cannot be real either. Thus, you are tricked into pursuing a solution that promises you eternal salvation while in reality keeping you stuck in the consciousness of separation. Yet because you think you are moving toward salvation, you are unwilling to question the illusion of separation and thus cannot awaken from it. That is why the false path becomes a catch-22.

The very core of the false path is the illusion of separation. Once you believe in this illusion, the inevitable companion of this belief is the fear of death. The false path plays up this fear and then promises you an escape from death. Yet the only true escape from death is to realize that this last enemy is not real, whereby death will lose its sting.

Why is death not real? As we say in The Art of Non-war, God is the Infinite, and there can be no divisions in infinity. Thus, when you realize that you are an extension of an infinite God, you also know that your lifestream, the Conscious You, simply cannot die.

Then why does the illusion of death seem so real? What actually happens when the Conscious You accepts the illusion of separation is NOT that your conscious self becomes mortal but that a separate self is created, a self that IS mortal. The Conscious You now steps into that separate self and thus sees the world through the filter of the mortal self, thinking the filter is real. It is like putting on a medieval suit of armor, from within which you see the world through a small slit, giving you a very limited perspective. That is why the Conscious You now believes – or perceives – that it really is separated from God and thus has the potential to die. Because the mortal self identifies itself as the mortal self, and because the mortal self CAN die, the conscious self begins to believe that it can die.

This fear of death is unbearable, and thus the Conscious You begins to look for a way out of it. As I have explained, the only true way out is to awaken from the illusion. However, in order to do this, the Conscious You has to make an admission, namely that the sense of separation is an illusion, that it created the mortal self and that it made a mistake in doing so. In order to do this, the Conscious You has to be willing to let its own creation – to let Frankenstein’s monster – die.

If you look at people on earth, you will see that some would rather die than admit that they made a mistake. In fact, millions of people have died physically because they would not admit they had made various mistakes. Yet what I am talking about here is that the Conscious You can be unwilling to admit that it made a spiritual mistake. That is why it will not go back and face its spiritual teacher – who is ready to help it free itself from the illusion without blame or guilt – as Maitreya explains in great detail in his book.

When a lifestream turns away from the true teacher, it sees no way that it can escape the fear of death on its own (because it subconsciously knows there is no such escape for the separate self). So it inevitably becomes susceptible to the false teachers—who promise the lifestream that it can escape death without having to admit that it made a mistake, without having to give up the mortal self that makes death seem possible. In other words, the false path is based on the promise that you can be saved without overcoming the illusion that makes it seem like you need to be saved.

Do you truly see what I am saying here? The entire problem is that the Conscious You is now looking at the world from inside the mortal self. The obvious solution is that the Conscious You separates itself from the mortal self and allows it to die—whereby the Conscious You is born of water and of spirit (John 3:5). The mortal self can NEVER become acceptable in the eyes of God, and thus it can never enter God’s kingdom, as I described in my parable about the wedding feast (Matthew 22:11). Yet the false path makes the promise that – through some process in this world – the mortal self can become acceptable and can gain entry into the kingdom of God—you only have to follow the outer rules prescribed by the false path and then God simply has to let the mortal self into the kingdom.

You may have visited a modern science museum and seen a demonstration of virtual reality. A person walks up on an empty stage and puts on a pair of goggles. What the person sees inside the goggles is a computer simulation, but it seems very real. Thus, the person is walking around on the stage convinced he is walking in a jungle and striking out at the brush or poisonous snakes. The audience sees the illusion on a screen but also sees that the person wearing the goggles is striking at thin air—like Don Quixote fighting the windmills.

Planet earth is like a giant computer simulation where everyone who enters puts on a pair of mental virtual reality goggles. Yet because people lose the memory of how the world looks without the goggles, they grow up believing that the perspective on the world delivered by the goggles is absolutely real. The task of each individual is to awaken him or herself from the illusion and take off the goggles. The goal of all true religion is to help people do this, whereas the goal of all false religion is to keep people playing the game as long as possible.

That is why a number of religions have been created in order to lure people deeper into the illusion. How can you identify such a false religion? It always sets up certain doctrines or beliefs as infallible or unquestionable, meaning that you are not allowed to question certain fundamental tenets of the religion. To keep people from asking dangerous questions, a religion will often define an elaborate world view that makes it seem very dangerous to question certain ideas, one example being the possibility of burning forever in hell. As if anything separated from God could possibly last forever.

The purpose of this fear-based world view is to prevent people from asking the very questions that could help them take off the virtual reality goggles and wake up from the collective illusion. So mixed in with the fear is also the carrot, the promise of what good will come if you keep following the tenets of the outer religion. This is the pattern found in all false religion—there is always a stick and a carrot.

The reality is that the promise made by an outer religion is like the carrot dangling on a stick in front of the donkey. When you walk toward it, you push the carrot in front of you. If you run faster, the carrot only moves away faster, but as long as you believe in the basic promise, your only option seems to be to run even faster so that you will eventually catch up to the carrot. And while you will never catch up, the belief will keep you so preoccupied with the chase that you never have time to step back and ask, “Why am I doing this? Will it actually lead me to where I want to go?”

Do you truly see what I am saying here? The sense that you are separated from God’s kingdom is an illusion. This sense of separation gives rise to the further illusion that if you only do something in the world that seems outside of God’s kingdom, you will be allowed into the kingdom. Yet no matter what you do or how much of it you do, an action based on the sense of separation – and the accompanying fear of death – can never help you overcome separation. The more you do in order to win salvation, the more you reinforce the illusion that you are separated from God. The ONLY thing that will set you free is to recognize and ADMIT that separation is unreal, thereby letting the mortal self die.

Thinking that actions based on the illusion of separation can lead to salvation is what gives rise to the belief that a simple outer act – such as being baptized in a Christian church, declaring me to be your Lord and Savior or a million other such devices – will “buy” your salvation. In reality, this entire consciousness is based on the illusion of separation. It says that there is a remote god and by pleasing this god – by giving him something he supposedly needs and wants from human beings – he will let you into the remote kingdom—after you die.

The true salvation that I preached 2,000 years ago was that God is not remote, and that no amount of earthly actions can buy your way into heaven. That is why I said to people that unless their righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees – who thought they had bought their salvation through outer observances – you would not enter the kingdom (Matthew 5:20). What I meant was that you must stop thinking that the kingdom comes through the observance of an outer religion. You must discover that the kingdom is within you because it comes only through a change of consciousness.

That is why – after I had my own awakening experience through my baptism by John – I went out and preached that the kingdom of God is at hand (Matthew 3:2, 4:17, 10:7), meaning that you can reach it right now on earth rather than having to wait for some remote future that never arrives. I was essentially saying that you will never find the kingdom until you realize that you were never separated from it, because it is right here, right NOW.

Yet as you will see from my life, the illusion of the false path is very seductive, and many people are so firmly convinced of its reality that they will completely refuse to admit the fallacy of the outer path and the reality of the inner path. That is why they ranted against me and accused me of being of the devil, as many mainstream Christians would rant against this discourse if they ever were to read it.

We have now set the foundation for understanding why the death consciousness gives some people the desire to die, to have the cessation of being, to no longer be conscious. We can also explain why people trapped in this state of consciousness see life as a never-ending string of strain and suffering and feel like it has no purpose and that their only escape is death—causing them to long for spiritual death. We can also gain a deeper understanding of how this was outplayed in Mother Teresa’s life.

Let us look at what happens to a lifestream that for the first time incarnates in a Catholic culture. The person grows up uncritically accepting the Catholic world view, thus believing that if it follows the tenets and practices of the Church, it is guaranteed to enter heaven after this life. The person then dies and the lifestream rises to the spiritual realm, where it is confronted with the undeniable reality that it is not ready to enter heaven but needs to reincarnate on earth in order to further purify its consciousness.

A lifestream may go through this process several times and can take two basic directions. Some end up becoming angry against Christianity, a particular church or all religion, which explains why many people in today’s world are hostile against organized religion. They have for many lifetimes bought into the promise made by such religion, have experienced its falsity and have retained some memory of it.

It might seem as if these lifestreams have become trapped in anger, and while some of them do, this stage is actually a precursor to overcoming the illusion represented by false religion, namely the willingness to question what religion defines as beyond questioning. The catch is, of course, that in order to become truly free, these lifestreams must take responsibility for themselves and realize that instead of blaming religion, they need to remove the beam from their own eyes—the illusion of separation. Adopting a world view that denies God’s existence, such as scientific materialism, will not accomplish this goal.

Another reaction is that a lifestream re-embodies without being willing to question the basic illusion of the false path. It often re-embodies in the same or a similar culture in order to gain another opportunity to overcome the illusion. This can go on for many lifetimes, and some actually get trapped in the game I just described. They think that in order to finally be saved, they simply have to become more diligent in observing the outer religion, and for each embodiment, their striving becomes more and more intense.

Eventually a lifestream can begin to free itself from this illusion, and some will then develop a desire to go back to earth to demonstrate to others that it is possible to rise above the illusion without becoming negative toward God or true spirituality. This was the case for Mother Teresa and many other mature lifestreams who are now in embodiment for the purpose of demonstrating the true, inner path. So in order to do this, a lifestream will come into embodiment deliberately to take on the death consciousness in its more extreme forms. What is the extreme outcome of the death consciousness?

The false path makes a promise that if you do something in this world, you will be guaranteed to enter heaven. So what happens when a lifestream believes this promise and experiences that it did not come true? Well, the false teachers have anticipated this and have thus created a very elaborate set of illusions designed to make it seem like it is all your fault. In other words, if you did not catch up to the carrot dangled in front of your nose, it was because YOU did not do something right, you were not running fast enough.

If a lifestream believes in this – which it MUST do as long as it is not willing to admit that it made a mistake by following the promise of salvation without giving up the mortal self – it will put itself in a downward spiral where its life will become more and more intense. In other words, if a lifestream will not question the illusion of separation itself, it MUST continue to seek salvation based on this illusion, thus believing it simply has to do more of the same in order to finally be saved. Many people are born with a lack of self-worth or are driven in various ways to strive for some goal that never seems to come true. In other words, their lives are swallowed up by an impossible quest. This is what Albert Einstein called the insanity that causes people to continue doing the same thing while believing that some day they will get a different result.

It should now be possible to see that as long as you stay in this downward, self-reinforcing spiral, your life will become increasingly dominated by tension and conflict. Your life becomes more and more conflicted, which inevitably leads to various kinds of spiritual suffering as well as psychological problems. Your conscious self will inevitably begin to sense the futility of this quest, but as long as it refuses to question its basic beliefs, it will seem as if there is no way out of the suffering.

Thus, a lifestream will begin to feel it is caught in a never-ending spiral of suffering that is put upon it by some outside force, be it an angry god or the devil. Such a lifestream can easily develop a desire to end this suffering through some final form of spiritual death that causes the cessation of being, the obliteration of self-awareness. God’s ultimate gift of self-awareness – the Creator sharing its own consciousness with you – is now seen as the ultimate curse. The false teachers will laugh all the way to the bank.

How can a lifestream escape this death spiral? Only by recognizing and admitting that the entire spiral is based on illusions—layer upon layer of interwoven illusions. The sense of separation is an illusion. The concept that you have to do something in this world in order to gain entry into God’s kingdom is an illusion. The concept that if you do not reach the goal, you have to run faster is an illusion.

The problem is that in order to overcome an illusion, you have to be willing to question the false belief that creates the illusion—whereby you come to see the contradictions that are built into any world view based on the death consciousness. In other words, you must be willing to question everything, and you must be willing to acknowledge the contradictions in your world view—seeing the beam in your own eye. A lifestream caught in the spiral is often reluctant to do this, as you clearly saw with Mother Teresa. The death consciousness is a very clever and elaborate attempt to create a prison with no exit. It does this by first creating one illusion and then creating another illusion which says that you are not allowed – due to an illusory penalty – to question the first illusion.

As an example, consider the following statement by Mother Teresa:

When I see someone sad, I always think, she is refusing something to Jesus. (page 33)

If Mother Teresa had been willing to look for her own contradictions, she would have had an Aha-experience that would have empowered her to see that the previous statement explains her own interior darkness. Why was she suffering? Because she was refusing something to me. What was she refusing? She was refusing to question everything, thus refusing to follow the Living Christ – which she had experienced in hear heart – while clinging to the Catholic image of the suffering “Christ” on the cross.

The prison of death is so escape-proof that when a lifestream caught in the spiral of suffering is presented with the true path, it can always find a “watertight” argument for rejecting it. This might be that it is coming from the devil or that it seems overwhelming to follow the path. In fact, many people have found the true teachings of the ascended masters and have turned them into another rat race, where it seems they have to run faster and faster in order to win their ascension.

There are two potential outcomes. One is that you make the switch in consciousness and “see” the falsity of the false path and the reality of the real path. You then see that the true path is NOT a continuation of the suffering of the false path. Instead, you attain progressively greater freedom from all human burdens and thus experience progressively greater joy and peace. The true path is NOT a matter of running faster but of stepping back and giving up the illusions that cause people to run—without seeing they are running away from God rather than toward God. It is not by holding on to the things of this world that you get to heaven but by letting go of ALL the things of this world.

The false path has created an elaborate illusion that by admitting you made a mistake, you will be condemned by God or should feel guilt or shame. The reality is that when you truly admit that you made a mistake, you are instantly free from the very consciousness created by the mistake—including the fear, anger, guilt, shame and lack of self-worth that spring from the illusion of separation. God does NOT want you to feel guilty for making a mistake, God only wants you to rise above the consciousness of separation that is the foundation for all mistakes.

Do you see what I am saying? The consciousness of death makes it seem like you cannot simply be free of a mistake by admitting it and surrendering the consciousness of the mistakes. No, no, this is too easy. Instead, you have to go through some elaborate ritual to free yourself from the “sin” of your mistake, including experiencing untold suffering before God will finally forgive your sins. The reality is that God will instantly forgive your sin the moment you forsake the consciousness of separation. You may still have karma to balance, but that can be done without any sense of guilt or shame—thus without suffering.
The false path says that you cannot be free until sometime in a remote future. The true path says you can be free right NOW because the kingdom of God is at hand!

What happens to those who cannot abandon the false path and accept the true path? Well, the reality is that you can actually return to oneness by following the false path!

You see, in the end, you have to come to the point of surrendering yourself completely unto God, which means that you give up the mortal self. So the only question is what kind of experiences – self-created experiences – a lifestream has to go through in order to reach that point of total surrender. Some can come to that point by following the path of the true teachers, while others must follow the path of acting upon the illusions of the false path until they reach a breaking point and simply cannot believe in these illusions anymore.

For this perspective, one might think that we who are the true teachers would lean back and simply let lifestreams walk whatever path they choose. However, we do not because we see clearly that a lifestream on the false path often has to go through almost unfathomable amounts of suffering before it finally gives up on this path and cries out for deliverance. If you will take this perspective and look at humankind, you will see that some people will go to incredible extremes in order to defend their beliefs in the false path, usually causing – almost – unbearable suffering for themselves and those around them.

I came to this world to spare people from this suffering—which is why I said I have come to give people life and that more abundantly. Of course, there is also a real risk that those who follow the false path will end up at the point of actually welcoming spiritual death and thus NOT being able to surrender the separate self, preferring instead to die with it and experience cessation of individual awareness.

If you will look at the life of Mother Teresa, you will see that she took on one of the more extreme expressions of the false path, namely the entire concept of the Via Dolorosa, the concept that you have to go through suffering in order to be saved—in fact that God and Christ require you to do this.

As I said in the last discourse, the Catholic Church never represented the true path. If you look at the Catholic belief in sharing the suffering of Christ, you might wonder where it came from. But it should be clear to those who read the scriptures that it did not come from me, nor from the early Christians.

According to Mother Teresa’s belief – and the belief of many Catholics, including some who are considered saints within the church – the most important aspect of my life and mission was my suffering on the cross. Thus, they focus on the crucified Jesus and the belief that my suffering and the spilling of my blood was the sacrifice that paid for humankind’s sins. This has caused many to believe that if they suffer, it is because they share in my passion and that their suffering will either alleviate my suffering or serve the same function of “buying” souls for God.

Now, we could go into a long discussion of where this belief came from, but my immediate point is that my early followers did not go around saying to each other: “Christ was crucified and he suffered for our sins!” No, they went around saying to each other: “Christ is risen!”

My early followers understood that it was not truly significant that I was crucified. What WAS significant is that I rose again after the death on the cross, thus demonstrating the potential that all have to conquer not simply death but the death consciousness itself. The cross is a symbol for the consciousness of separation that cause people to be trapped in a fixed position that causes suffering. My resurrection is a symbol of people’s potential to rise above the cross by giving up the ghost of the mortal self.

Why was this realization lost? Because Christianity was taken over by those who were so trapped in the death consciousness that they could not let go of the firm belief in the external God who requires some kind of compensation, sacrifice or payment in order to let you into heaven. Why could they not let go of this? Because they would not let go of the dream that the mortal self can somehow become acceptable to God and thus they can be saved without letting the mortal self die.

The psychological effect was that even my example of overcoming death was perverted and turned into a path that offered the possibility of buying your way into heaven by sharing in my suffering, my passion on the cross. You might say that this was an understandable belief given the physical suffering that people experienced during the middle ages and before, but which came first—the chicken or the egg?

When you realize that the universe is a mirror, you see that by focusing on suffering, people precipitated more suffering, which became a self-reinforcing spiral. My teachings were meant to prevent this, but instead the perverted versions of my teachings actually accelerated the spiral and made it harder for people to escape it. That is why the only way out was for so many people to abandon all faith in Christianity and instead turn to science for a less limiting world view.

So to claim that the path of suffering actually is the true path of Christ is a complete failure to understand what my mission is about.

However, that being said, we of the ascended masters never give up on any lifestream. No matter how deeply people sink into the duality consciousness, we always seek to offer them what seems – with their current level of consciousness – to be a viable way out. And if people are stuck in the belief that they need to suffer and sacrifice in order to be saved, we still seek to help them. However, in many cases the ONLY way in which we can help them is to actually encourage them to take the path of suffering to such an extreme that they finally break through and see the unreality of it all. We must take the non-attractive option of seeking to bring people to the breaking point as quickly as possible in order to shorten their suffering.

Take the following remark that Mother Teresa made to one of her superiors when she was trying to convince him of the genuineness of her mission:

. . . does the Good God give these desires and not mean them to come true? (page 94)

Mother Teresa reasons the way many other religious people have reasoned when they feel they have received some kind of higher direction for their lives. They interpret the directions with their current state of consciousness, assuming their interpretation is completely accurate. Thus, if they believe they have received genuine direction, they MUST believe the direction was given for its stated purpose. They cannot conceive of the possibility that the direction was given in order to achieve God’s ultimate goal, which is to set all lifestreams free from the illusions of death. Thus, it is entirely possible – and much more common than most spiritual people will be willing to admit – that people receive a higher direction that is NOT meant to be taken literally. And if the direction IS taken literally, it will actually push people further into a catch-22 that will hopefully bring them to the point of surrender as quickly as possible.

You see, when you begin to follow the path of seeking to buy your salvation, you are putting yourself in a mental box. Your beliefs that doing outer things will “force” God to let you into his kingdom form the sides of the box. And the more you push in order to secure your salvation, the more you close in the box. You come to the breaking point when the box has become so narrow that you can no longer move and thus hopefully cry out for deliverance, realizing there must be a better way.

Now, you must understand that if a lifestream is truly caught in the death consciousness, the law of free will prevents us from doing anything to help such a lifestream. But when a lifestream has taken on this consciousness as part of its mission – as Mother Teresa did – we are allowed to follow the desires of the higher mind of that lifestream, even when the outer mind has lost awareness of them. Thus, we can indeed push such people in order to bring them to the point of surrender that is the very key to the fulfillment of their mission—if they accept it and actually surrender.

I know full well that these concepts are not for those who are new on the spiritual path. Yet take note that they are given in order to help those who are burdened by the death consciousness. My purpose is to show you that the essence of the death consciousness is that you think there is something you simply cannot question. Yet the key to freedom from the death consciousness is to question what it says you must not question. ONLY in doing this will you see through the illusion that is keeping you trapped in a mental prison that is completely unreal!

As an example of the kind of catch-22 you need to overcome, consider the following vow by Mother Teresa:

I made a vow to God, binding under [pain of] mortal sin, to give God anything that he may ask, “Not to refuse him anything.” (page 29)

This vow, made early in her life, was a major factor in preventing her from totally surrendering to God, including surrendering her dualistic view of the remote god. There are many things wrong with the consciousness behind this vow, but let me point out the ones that are most relevant to this discussion:

• It is based on the view of God as an external being who is making demands upon you that you might not want to follow with your outer mind. When you rise above the illusion of the external God, you see that “God’s will” is an synonym for the will of your own higher being. There is no external being seeking to force his will upon you. It is your own higher being that is seeking to help you do what you decided to do before you came into embodiment and were blinded by the collective consciousness on earth.
• Why would you feel the need to make such a vow? Because you had not fully surrendered to God and thus you are afraid that you might refuse the external God what he demands. So you make a vow to scare yourself into never refusing the external God. When you fully surrender to God, you also surrender the illusion of the external God, and thus you spontaneously follow “God’s will” because you know it is your own higher will. Thus, you have no need to make such a vow.
• Only the mortal self can resist your own higher will, so if you fear that you might resist, it proves that you have not surrendered the mortal self. Mother Teresa believed that by making this vow, she had surrendered herself fully to God, yet the vow itself proves that she had not fully surrendered the mortal self and its built-in belief in the external God.
• Not only does this consciousness see God as the external God, it even thinks it has power over that God. What Mother Teresa was saying between the lines is that she thought she could force God to send her to hell if she refused God anything. This is the extreme outcome of the death consciousness, where beings are so blinded by pride that they think that what they do based on the death consciousness actually has an effect of God. Yet God is not mocked and is no respecter of persons. Nothing that could ever be done through the death consciousness can affect God. That which is unreal cannot affect that which is real.
• The beliefs behind this vow made Mother Teresa think that whatever she felt God demanded of her, she had to fulfill in order to avoid mortal sin. Yet much of what God demanded of her was designed to push her into a corner, where she would finally say no and begin to question her entire image of the external God, her belief in buying salvation through suffering, and the false path itself.
  She had these questions come up in her mind:

What do I labour for? If there be no God—there can be no soul.—If there is no soul then Jesus—You also are not true. (page 192-93)

My very life seems so contradictory. I help souls—to go where?—Why all this? (page 210)

Yet instead of acknowledging these thoughts as coming from her higher self, she rejected them as coming from the devil. In reality sin is the consciousness of separation, the consciousness of death. Do you see what I am saying? Sin is not an action you commit. An action simply creates a reaction in the form of misqualified energy or karma. You need to pay this back, but the process does not require you to feel guilty or separate yourself from God. Sin IS the sense of separation from God, for it is this state of consciousness – and only this state of consciousness – that keeps you outside God’s kingdom.

Nothing you could do while inside the death consciousness can secure your salvation. The ONLY way to salvation is to separate yourself completely from the death consciousness, which can ONLY be done by surrendering all aspects of this consciousness, including the belief that you need to do fulfill certain worldly conditions in order to buy your salvation. Thus, Mother Teresa’s dualistic concept of sin and paying back sin through suffering actually kept her outside the kingdom of God for 50 years, whereas my desire was for her to have been inside the kingdom the entire time and demonstrating this to others.

What is my point for this long discourse? If you are one of the people who have struggled with the death consciousness, then I hope you will finally come to the conscious realization that ALL of your troubles are caused by the fact that there is something you have not surrendered. And the reason you have not surrendered it is that you have not questioned certain beliefs—precisely because those beliefs are designed in such a way as to prevent you from questioning them.

So to finally escape this treadmill of ongoing pain and suffering, what you need to do is to question the unquestionable and surrender what is surely illusions. You see, what has really happened is that the prince of this world has managed to make people believe that in order to be free of the death consciousness, they have to meet certain conditions. Yet those very conditions are defined by the death consciousness, and thus as long as you believe in their reality, you cannot escape this consciousness.

The ONLY way out is to surrender ALL conditions by realizing that God’s love for YOU is absolutely unconditional. Why? God loves you as himself because you ARE himself, you are an extension of the Creator’s being and nothing you have done in this world could ever change that fact. The prince of this world wants to make you believe that what you did in the past has changed the reality of who you are, but it is not true. You need to surrender all aspects of this illusion, until you come to the point of total surrender, where the prince of this world cometh and has nothing in you. At that point, the Christ will have risen in you, and you will be able to proclaim to the world, “He is risen!” – knowing the true meaning of this statement.

You can do that right now if you like!

If you find it absolutely necessary to wait for some unspecified future time, then all I can do is accept your choice. However, don’t come to me later and say that I did not make an effort to spare you for the suffering that lies between now and your future awakening.

In closing, let me comment on the following question from above, “Now, I do not know whether this is my own consciousness or whether I took on some of the collective consciousness.”

Let me give you a way to evaluate whether you are one of the beings who are trapped in the death consciousness or whether you have volunteered to take it on in order to help others. The key is your level of identification with it.

People who are trapped in the death consciousness are usually very reluctant to question their basic assumptions and feel they know better than others, even better than the true spiritual teachers—in some cases even better than God. These are the people who will read this and who will immediately start picking apart what I have said, interpreting it according to the beliefs they think are infallible and that they therefore do not need to question. In other words, some people fear to question the death consciousness, but those who are most trapped are those who – out of spiritual pride – do not think they need to question their beliefs because they are fully convinced that they could not be wrong.

Those who have merely taken on the death consciousness are those who are much more meek and humble, thus being more willing to consider that they could be wrong or have something to learn. So if you are willing to admit that you are affected by the death consciousness, it is a good sign that you have either taken it on or are well on your way to overcoming it.

In essence, no being was ever created in the death consciousness, so all beings have taken it on. However, some took in on in a higher sphere and are thus more identified with it than those who took in on here on earth. So by the fact that you ask the question, you prove it is something you have taken on here on earth in order to demonstrate how to overcome it. So get on with overcoming it, so you can fulfill your desire to help others do the same!

Obviously, this teaching applies to many of those who have studied this website for a while—whether you have taken on this or that aspect of duality. Many of you are already made sincere efforts to balance your karma and work through your psychology. You are ready to awaken from the illusions of the death consciousness—to simply leave the last shackles behind. All that is standing between you and victory is one final act of total surrender—setting you free to start your real missions. So let us all move higher together and call the bluff of those who portray themselves as the true teachers of humankind, but inside they are like whitened sepulchers filled with dead men’s bones.

We have yet other worlds to conquer—but let us start by conquering this one.

Question from Kim: Jesus, in Part 2 of this discussion, you explained that most spiritual people have taken on an aspect of the mass consciousness, and it is part of our divine plan to help resolve it by freeing ourselves from it. You also said we can learn from Mother Teresa’s difficulties, so I read through the passages that I had marked in the book, Come Be My Light. And I found some passages that I think are quite confusing, so it would be helpful for people to have you give us a better understanding.

Answer from ascended master Jesus through Kim Michaels:

Let me first clarify what we are talking about. The consciousness we are addressing is very complex and it has taken on many different disguises. In fact, Lord Maitreya spends his entire book discussing the origins of this consciousness, so if people really want to understand it, they need to read the book. However, I can give a very simple summary by saying that the core of this consciousness is the denial of God.

From a surface viewpoint, it will seem to many religious people that the consciousness of denying God is primarily expressed in outright denial, such as atheism, satanism, political ideologies such as marxism or scientific materialism. Yet this is an immature viewpoint, for the denial of God has been cleverly disguised in virtually every major religion. As I said, “There shall arise false Christs, and false prophets” (Matthew 24:24).

Many Catholics believe this refers to anyone outside the Catholic Church, but the real meaning is that it refers to anyone, anywhere who claims that Christ is outside of you instead of affirming that Christ can be found only in the kingdom of God—which is within you.

The specific aspect of this consciousness that Mother Teresa had vowed to take on was precisely the denial of God that has disguised itself as being very religious. This was essentially the consciousness exemplified by the scribes, the Pharisees and the lawyers who opposed my mission and denied that I was the Living Christ.

All spiritual people have taken on aspects of this consciousness—which I called “death,” meaning spiritual death. Just go through the New Testament and see how often I talked about those who are dead yet physically alive. Many spiritual people have actually vowed to take on the very aspect that Mother Teresa took on. This was certainly the case for all of the so-called Catholic mystics but also for many modern people who have grown up Catholic but who now have questions about the Church and its doctrines. All such people have volunteered to help transform the very consciousness that keeps all religion – including the Catholic Church – stuck in a blind alley.

When you vow to take on an aspect of the mass consciousness, you are born within an environment that is an expression of this consciousness. Thus, you grow up identifying yourself based on the very illusion you have vowed to transform. For example, Mother Teresa obviously identified herself as a Catholic.

How do you contribute to transforming the illusion? By realizing that you are MORE than the illusion, more than a Catholic, Muslim or Hindu, more than male or female, more than any nationality or any other division created on earth. You must connect to your true, spiritual identity which is anchored in your I AM Presence, whereby your conscious self realizes that it is MORE than ANY earthly appearance. In reality, you are a co-creator with God. As I said, “Ye are Gods” (John 10:34).

Only by recognizing your true identity can you overcome the illusion that keeps you separated from God, because it causes you to deny God—the God that is within you. The ultimate demonstration of having overcome the consciousness of death is when you affirm with me, “I and my Father are one!” It is only when a critical mass of the most spiritual people dare to step forward and affirm their divine identity, that religion will truly change on this planet.

Mother Teresa had the potential to do this, and she was very close. In the end, she could not turn the dial of consciousness and truly switch her identity away from being a Catholic to being a universal spiritual being. This was what her call actually called her to do, but she could not make the switch. And by understanding why she could not, you can indeed make it easier for yourself to let go of all false sense of identity.

The name of God is “I AM,” so when you say “I am” and follow it with anything from earth, you are actually taking the Lord’s name in vain by denying God as your true source, your true identity. In reality, you are NOT a human being. You are God expressing itself through a human body. Your father works hitherto, and you work (John 5:17).

Kim: I think the first thing that hits people about Mother Teresa’s darkness is how this could happen to a person who is seen as a model for a religious person, one who had dedicated her life to serving God by helping other people. I saw a TV program in which a group of women talked about spending many years working closely with Mother Teresa. They talked about how she radiated peace, love and joy. They even described how she had certain spiritual abilities, including knowing exactly what was going on in people’s lives and psyches and even knowing future events. This sounds like an advanced lifestream, so it is almost shocking to people to read her words:

Now Father—since 49 or 50 this terrible sense of loss—this untold darkness—this loneliness this continual longing for God—which gives me that pain deep down in my heart—darkness is such that I really do not see neither with my mind nor with my reason—the place of God in my lifestream is blank—There is no God in me—when the pain of longing is so great—I just long & long for God—and then it is that I feel—He does not want me—He is not there—… God does not want me—Sometimes—I just hear my own heart cry out—”My God” and nothing else comes—The torture and pain I can’t explain. (pages 1-2)

Can you shed some light on why there is such a dramatic contrast between the public perception of her and her own inner experience?

Jesus: As I said above, when you grow up in a particular environment, you develop a sense of identity – what some psychologists call as “sub-personality” – that is adapted to your environment. This is inevitable, and there is no reason to blame yourself for this. Most people have grown up in an environment that is – from a spiritual perspective – dysfunctional, so it is unavoidable that the outer personality is somewhat dysfunctional. It is also very common that people come to identity themselves as the outer personality and thus forget about their real, spiritual identity.

So what I am saying is that most people have – at least – two personalities. For people who are spiritually mature, their higher personality will often shine through the outer personality, and the highest potential is that such people will gradually shift their sense of identity away from the outer personality and come to fully accept who they are as spiritual beings.

Mother Teresa was a spiritually mature being, so when she was in public or when she was helping someone in need, her higher personality would indeed shine through—because she would, so to speak, forget herself – meaning her mortal self – in serving the needs of others. Thus, what people saw publicly was to a large extent her real identity.

Kim: That must be what she experienced when she said:

When outside—in the work—or meeting people—there is a presence—of somebody living very close—in very me.—I don’t know what this is—that love in me for God grows more real. (page 211)

Jesus: Correct, she did have experiences of her higher self living within her without being able to accept it. Thus, when she was alone, Mother Teresa would – without being aware of it – switch to the outer personality and would now experience the world, herself and God through the filter of that personality. The tragedy of her life was that she could not accept that this personality was the unreal part of herself. Therefore, she could not let the mortal self die and be reborn of the Spirit.

As her mission unfolded and she began to get public recognition, she would experience an increasing contrast and contradiction between her public actions and words and what she felt in the privacy of her mind. We might say that because she was not able to “dis-identify” herself from the outer personality – her private personality – she could not accept that her public personality was her real self. Thus, she felt she was being a hypocrite by talking about the love for God while not feeling it within.

This is not uncommon for people who come to be in the public eye, and come to be seen as “great” people. Most “normal” people find the reverse effect. They express their outer personality in public (other people bring out the worst in them) and connect to their higher personality in private moments. This actually makes it easier for them to gradually accept that the private personality is their real self.

As a result of the growing contrast, Mother Teresa dreaded being alone and having time to reflect, so she intentionally kept herself very busy in order to avoid going within. An honest examination will for many people reveal that they are doing the exact same thing—using outer activity as an excuse for not dealing with something in their psyches.

What I would like these people to learn from Mother Teresa is that no matter how busy you make yourself, you will not completely escape experiencing the inner condition. And no matter how much good you do for others, this will not automatically remove or resolve your inner condition. So instead of running away from this, it is far more constructive to face the inner contradiction by recognizing that this is precisely the consciousness that you have taken on in order to demonstrate how to rise above it. And by using all available tools – including the many tools and teachings given on the toolbox website and in the books  – it is not that difficult to rise above this condition. It is far better to put forth a determined effort for a short time than to suffer from the inner conflict for the rest of your life!

Kim: I think this quote illustrates what you are saying:

I do not believe, Father, in that continual digging into one’s spiritual life—by long & frequent visits and talks. . . . Our spiritual life must remain simple—so as to be able to understand the mind of our poor. (page 215)

Obviously, she wasn’t able to resolve the problem in part because she didn’t believe in dealing with such problems, but there must be other reasons as well. Why wasn’t Mother Teresa – being a mature lifestream – able to separate herself from the outer identity?

Jesus: That is a complex problem which will be revealed as we continue the discussion, so let us not get ahead of ourselves.

Kim: The next reaction I sense from people is that they cannot understand why Mother Teresa – being so religious and self-less – could possibly feel unwanted and unloved by God. This is two of several quotes where she expresses her inner agony:

There is so much contradiction in my lifestream.—Such deep longing for God—so deep that it is painful—a suffering continual—and yet not wanted by God—repulsed—empty—no faith—no love—no zeal.—Souls hold no attraction—heaven means nothing—to me it looks like an empty place—the thought of it means nothing to me and yet this torturing longing for God. (page 170)

Lord, my God, who am I that You should forsake me? The child of your love—and now become as the most hated one—the one You have thrown away as unwanted—unloved. I call, I cling, I want—and there is no One to answer—no One on Whom I can cling—no, No One.—alone. The darkness is so dark—and I am alone.—Unwanted, forsaken.—The loneliness of the heart that wants love is unbearable. (page 187)

Jesus: We now come to the heart of the matter, yet I need to give a bit of background. As I said above, most religious people find it easy to see that atheists or materialists practice denial of God—for they claim God does not exist. Yet those same religious people find it almost impossible to admit that they – through their religion – are actually practicing a form of denial of God that is simply more subtle and thus more seductive.

The vast majority of the religions on this planet have fallen into a violation of the first two commandments given to Moses. They have created a graven image of God, whereby I do not mean a golden calf or an icon carved in stone. I mean a mental image of God that they have elevated to an infallible and unquestionable doctrine. By seeing this image as infallible, they have put the image before God. They have created a false God and they worship that false god instead of the Living God, the God who is beyond ALL man-made images—which is precisely why the real God gave those two commandments as the first ones.

Furthermore, they have added the belief that if people blindly believe in the graven image, their salvation is guaranteed. Whereas if people dare to question the image, they will burn forever in hell. In other words, the graven image – designed to keep people separated from God – is now portrayed as the ONLY road to salvation.

This leads to the belief that by observing an outer religion – without actually removing the beam from your own eye by dealing with the denial of God in your psychology – God simply has to let you into his kingdom. It is the belief that you can overcome the separation from God without removing the very consciousness that keeps you separated from the kingdom of God within you. Despite the fact that I denounced this approach in several statements – most notably that the kingdom of God does not come with observation but is within you – most Christian churches have “overlooked” the reality of my teaching.

What is the image of God taught by most religions? It is the image that God is an external being, often portrayed as a remote being in the sky.

If you look at my life, you will see that I affirmed the Presence of God within me and I affirmed my oneness with God. My entire mission was aimed at encouraging all people to walk the path toward oneness with God. Instead of following my example, Christian churches have elevated me to an exception that no one else can follow. Thus, they have created a graven image of Christ and have elevated me to an idol that they worship before the Living Christ that I AM. You cannot worship the Living Christ from afar—you can “worship” the Living Christ only by becoming one with Christ, by becoming the Living Christ in embodiment.

In summary, the real denial of God is the denial that God is everywhere. Thus, God is where you are, including within you, meaning that you are an extension of God. This denial, as explained in Maitreya’s book, started with a group of beings who rebelled against God in a higher sphere. They have since created a very elaborate illusion that portrays this world as being separated from God. In other words, God is not found on earth, for God is in his heaven. Only very special people can connect directly to God – if you are a Christian, only me – and this happened only in the past. Thus, YOU cannot do this and so can no one else today.

Once you understand this, you see clearly that Mother Teresa had grown up in a religious culture that was heavily infused with – even based upon – this denial of God and the illusion of the remote God. Thus, her outer personality was very much based upon this image. And because she could not free herself from the outer personality, she could not escape the sense that God was outside of her—meaning that she could not escape the sense of separation with its inevitable loneliness and sense of being unwanted by God.

You see, her higher personality had a deep longing for oneness with God, but in seeking to fulfill this longing, she could only conceive of doing so through the filter of the outer personality. And because her outer personality was based on the denial of God where you are, how could she possibly go beyond the sense of separation? How could she find oneness with God through an approach to religion that is based on a denial of God’s Presence where you are by clinging to the image of the remote God?

There is absolutely, positively only one way for anyone to get beyond the catch-22 represented by the consciousness of the denial of God. Mother Teresa would have had to admit that her outer personality was the unreal part of herself, and then she would have had to let it die and be spiritually reborn. Why couldn’t she do this? Because her outer personality was based upon her Catholic upbringing and thus this personality firmly believed that the Catholic Church is the ONLY road to salvation—for itself and for all other people.

That is why Mother Teresa felt that by questioning her outer personality, she would be questioning the Church and its image of God, which she believed to be blasphemy that would send her to hell:

I have no faith.—I dare not utter the words & thoughts that crowd in my heart—& make me suffer untold agony. So many unanswered questions live within me—I am afraid to uncover them—because of the blasphemy. (page 187)

That is why it is so crucial for spiritual people to understand the concept of the conscious self as the center of self-awareness and the faculty that makes decisions. The spiritual path, salvation or whatever you want to call it is NOT an automatic or outer process. It is an inner process, and for each step you take, the conscious self must make a conscious decision to let go of an illusion that springs from the consciousness of anti-christ.

We might say that the Conscious You is between two forces that are pulling on it from opposite directions. One force is the ego and the forces of anti-christ who are pulling you into – in all manner of subtle ways – deny your true identity as a spiritual being. One of the most common versions of this denial is to make you believe you can be saved by following an outer religion instead of removing the beam from your own psyche. The other force is the force of your higher self, that is calling you to let go of the human self and accept your spiritual identity.

If you read the book about Mother Teresa with this dynamic in mind, you will see it outplayed so clearly. Her higher self gave her a sincere longing for oneness with God. As time went on, the longing became stronger, and the natural cause of events would have been that she had experienced a progressively deeper union, with all the peace and joy that follows with it. Yet because she could not let the outer personality die, she would not surrender herself to this union, and as a result the tension kept growing. Which is what she experienced as a progressively greater aloneness and emptiness. That is why she said:

Pray for me—that I may not refuse God.—It comes to the breaking point & then it does not break. (page 190)

What she needed to do was to let it break—to let her identification with the outer self die—as I gave up the ghost on the cross. Yet because she would not give up the ghost of the outer self, she kept herself on the cross for 50 years, whereas I only stayed on it for mere hours.

Mother Teresa clearly experienced a progressively deeper longing for oneness with God. Yet because she did not experience God’s Presence, she could only reason that God did not want her, had rejected her and even hated her. Yet why did she feel this way? Because she was still looking at God through the filter of the consciousness that denies God’s Presence within you. She projected an image upon God that was based on the consciousness of denying God.

This is where spiritual people need to be smarter than the forces of anti-christ. Most spiritual people have grown up in an environment that is not spiritual. So to rediscover their spiritual identity, they often need a so-called spiritual or mystical experience. Yet precisely because they have grown up in a non-spiritual environment – which can include a religious environment based on the denial of God where you are – they will see this spiritual experience as coming from some being outside themselves. In other words, many people have had spiritual experiences that were valid, yet they saw them as coming from a remote God, thus reinforcing the illusion of the external god.

Starting her mission was part of Mother Teresa’s divine plan. Yet she had grown up believing she would be a typical Catholic nun for the rest of her life. That is why she needed a very powerful spiritual vision in order to get her to go beyond this limited self-image. Yet precisely because of her upbringing with the image of the remote God, she firmly believed this experience was coming from me as an external, remote being.

Her higher being had a genuine love for me and a sense of oneness with me, but in her conscious mind, she could see me only as an external being. Thus, although she talked about and longed for oneness with me – being my bride – she could not see herself as truly one with me—she could not see herself as becoming the Living Christ on earth.

Yet precisely because her highest potential was to become one with me – to become the Living Christ – I could not fulfill her longing for more spiritual experiences. As long as she looked at her experience through the filter of the remote God and the external Christ, giving her further experiences would only have reinforced this belief, thus actually making it LESS likely that she would eventually fulfill her mission of going beyond graven images.

In her higher being, Mother Teresa had reached the upper stages on the path to Christhood, as had other mystics, such as John of the Cross. At this stage, you need to let the outer personality – based on the belief in the external God – die so you can discover the kingdom of God – the Presence of God – within yourself. The dark night that many mystics experience is a product of an unwillingness to either let the outer self die or accept yourself as an extension of God (or both). The length and intensity of this night is determined solely by your willingness or unwillingness to surrender your graven image of an external God and accept the reality of the internal God.

Each person has a divine plan that determines the moment where that person ideally should have surrendered and have been spiritually reborn. The more time that goes beyond that point, the more the tension will grow.

In other words, you are not truly abandoned by God. You are deliberately deprived of ANY spiritual experiences that your outer personality will perceive as coming from an external god. This does not mean that you cannot have spiritual experiences, but you can ONLY have them when you see them as coming from inside yourself.

Kim: This is illustrated by the following quotes:

In spite of it all—this darkness & emptiness is not as painful as the longing for God.—The contradiction I fear will unbalance me.—What are You doing My God to one so small? . . . If this brings You glory, if You get a drop of joy from this—if lifestreams are brought to You—if my suffering satiates Your Thirst—here I am Lord, with joy I accept all to the end of life. (page 187-88)

In the call You said that I would suffer much.—Ten years—my Jesus, You have done to me according to your will . . . if this pleases You—if my pain and suffering—my darkness and separation gives You a drop of consolation—my own Jesus, do with me as You wish—as long as You wish . . . why Jesus, I am willing with all my heart to suffer all that I suffer—not only now—but for all eternity—if that was possible . . . (page 193-94)

It seems to me she very much believes that she has surrendered herself to God and to you, and that is why – as you said in the previous discussion – she believes her suffering is something you are doing to her, while you are saying she is doing it to herself. No wonder she could not overcome this catch-22. What would you say about the following remark by one of her spiritual advisors:

It was simply the dark night of which all masters of spiritual life know—though I never found it so deeply, and for so many years as in her. There is no human remedy against it. (page 214)

Jesus: Well, he is right that there is no human remedy against it; the only remedy being to let the human identity die. Yet the fact that her many spiritual advisors could not help her overcome the catch-22 clearly demonstrates that it is impossible to overcome a problem with the same state of consciousness that created the problem. In other words, a church that is based on the consciousness of the denial of God obviously cannot help its members overcome their sense of separation from God. How can a church that is based on worshipping the external God help people find God within themselves?

Let me make a very clear statement regarding the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church is NOT my church. It does not represent Christ on earth, but very much represents the consciousness of anti-christ. This is not meant as a judgment against the many Catholics who do have a great love and devotion to me, but it is meant to draw a line in the sand between those who love the Living Christ and those who cling to an outer institution and its doctrines—that present a graven image of Christ.

What you can say about Christianity as a whole is that it started out with a pure foundation and then gradually lost it. Yet you cannot say that about the Catholic Church. From its very inception by the emperor Constantine, it was designed to be an institution that pacifies the people so they cannot overthrow the status quo that keeps the power elite in control.

There is only one way for the people to overthrow the power elite – meaning people who identify fully with the consciousness of anti-christ – and fulfill their divine mandate to have dominion over the earth. That way is for a critical mass of the most spiritually aware people to recognize the Presence of God within them, which is precisely what I came to demonstrate.

The Catholic Church traces its roots to Peter, who, as explained elsewhere, denied his oneness with me and thereby denied his own potential to step up from being a follower of Christ to being the Living Christ in embodiment. This is due to a failing to pass the second challenge of Christ. I am sad to say that this is – despite her great humanitarian service – the exact path followed by Mother Teresa’s outer personality. So despite the fact that she has inspired many people, this was NOT the consequential example that I need in this age. I need those who will go beyond blindly following a mental image of Christ and who will dare to throw off the yoke of the denial of God, thereby coming into the true oneness with Christ that makes them accept that THEY are now the Living Christ on earth.

Kim: I think there are a couple of quotes that show that Mother Teresa was beginning to suspect what you are saying here:

They say people in hell suffer eternal pain because of the loss of God—they would go through all that suffering if they had just a little hope of possessing God.—In my soul I feel just that terrible pain of loss—of God not wanting me—of God not being God—of God not really existing (Jesus, please forgive my blasphemies—I have been told to write everything). That darkness that surrounds me on all sides—I can’t lift my soul to God—no light or inspiration enters my soul.—I speak of love for souls—of tender love for God—words pass through my lips—and I long to believe in them.—What do I labour for? If there be no God—there can be no soul.—If there is no soul then Jesus—You also are not true.—heaven what emptiness—not a single thought of heaven enters my mind—for there is no hope.—I am afraid to write all those terrible things that pass in my soul. (page 192-93)

My very life seems so contradictory. I help souls—to go where?—Why all this? (page 210)

It seems she is beginning to doubt that God exists, which to me would indicate that her higher being is beginning to recognize that the Catholic Church has presented her with a false image of God. In other words, she is not really doubting God’s existence but is doubting the existence of the external God. Would you agree?

Jesus: Yes, but it must be added that she would not have been able to formulate that idea in her outer mind, nor would she have been willing to accept it if it had been presented to her. However, it is true that all spiritual people must go through a period in which they question the image of an external God – in whatever form they have come to accept it – and for many this feels as if they are questioning God. This is a product of the fact that they have not been presented with an alternative to the external God. Needless to say, this causes much inner agony and suffering that could easily be avoided if people had an alternative to the denial of God.

Take note of the remark, “they would go through all that suffering if they had just a little hope of possessing God.” and put it together with another remark:

Why must we give ourselves fully to God? Because God has given himself to us. . . . To give ourselves fully to God is a means of receiving God himself. I for God and God for me. I live for God and give up my own self, and in this way induce God to live for me. Therefore to possess God we must allow him to possess our lifestream. (page 29)

Again, this is a subtle concept that is made more difficult by the ambiguity of words. Yet my point is that the concept of “possessing God” is a very dangerous concept because it can so easily be misused by the consciousness of death, causing people to sink deeper into denying God’s Living Presence within them.

It is actually a remnant of the old concept of an angry god in the sky who demands sacrifices in order to grant forgiveness of sin. It is very much tied to the Christian falsehood that my death on the cross – the spilling of my blood – was the ultimate sacrifice that paid for all of humankind’s sins, past and future.

It leads to various beliefs that say you can buy your salvation by conforming to outer rules instead of changing your innermost being. Such illusions have led many religious people to spend a lifetime trying to conform to outer rules or doing “good works,” thinking this would secure their salvation. Yet if it did nothing to change their consciousness, their efforts did not secure their salvation and often solidified the consciousness that keeps them outside the inner kingdom.

For example, Mother Teresa’s belief that her suffering and the suffering of her sisters would bring souls to God was mistaken. Yet there is a core of truth in the sense that her suffering was caused by her taking on the consciousness of death. And by wrestling with this consciousness, she did help make it easier for other people to find God. Yet she would have done infinitely more had she actually overcome this consciousness and demonstrated this publicly. In other words, the suffering itself did not help others but rising above the suffering would have—as some actually perceived her to have done.

What is hiding behind the concept that you possess something? Well, there is a you and there is an object, and the two must of necessity be separate. For if there is no separation, you can’t have a state in which you do NOT possess the object. And the concept of possessing an object can exist only in a duality with NOT possessing the object. So the statement “to possess God we must allow him to possess our soul” springs from a dualistic image of God as a remote being who can therefore possess or not possess you, meaning that you can possess or not possess God.

In reality, the essential point is not whether God possesses you or you possess God. Your real option is to become one with God by overcoming the illusion of separation that makes possession seem possible.

This image of God actually springs from the consciousness that caused the fall, namely a desire to control God in order to justify that beings can do whatever they want. You see, you can control God only if God is a remote God. It is only the outer ego-based personality that wants to control God. The internal God cannot be controlled, for you can find that God only by going beyond the ego and the need to control anything.

The reality that I came to this planet to teach people is that there is no actual separation between you and God. The sense of separation is an illusion caused by the fact that people have been blinded by the consciousness of anti-christ that causes them to deny God’s Presence within them. Thus, you cannot possess God, for you ARE God and God cannot possess you for God IS you. Possession is a product of separation, and once separation has been overcome, possession becomes irrelevant.

So Mother Teresa had correctly sensed that you need to give yourself fully to God. Yet the reality is that what you give to God is ALL of your human self, the very sense of identity that keeps you separated from oneness with God. Yet because of her Catholic upbringing, she had come to believe that this means giving up all aspects of your sense of self:

Pray for the light that I may see and [for] courage to do away with anything of self in the work. I must disappear completely—if I want God to have the whole. (page 113)

In reality, you need to do away with any aspect of the human self, but NOT your spiritual self. Your spiritual identity was created by God; it is God expressing itself – or longing to express itself – through you—as you. So denying that part of your Self is denying God where you are! And this is yet another aspect of the consciousness of anti-christ. You are meant to express your spiritual identity through your works on earth.

In reality, by denying God where you are, you are denying yourself. You are denying the reality that your Self is an expression of God.

So the real aim of the consciousness of anti-christ is to get you to deny yourself as God, to get you to deny God. What is the consequence? It is that you are taken out of the eternal NOW. You are programmed to look forward to a salvation that comes in some remote future when you are in heaven, thus denying your potential to be the Christ here on earth.

This is exactly what those who are trapped in the consciousness of anti-christ want. They know that if enough people come to accept themselves as the Living Christ, this will be the one thing that can overthrow their control of this planet. Thus, they are seeking to do everything possible to get people to deny that they can be the Christ right now, right here on earth.

For the majority of the people this is not experienced as a problem, for they have not yet reached the spiritual maturity that gives them the potential to be the Christ in embodiment. Yet for the most spiritual people, it is a major problem for it will inevitably give rise to inner conflict and tension, which is precisely what Mother Teresa experienced. If you look at her experience and go beyond all outer appearances, you will see that at its core was her inner knowing that she was not where she needed to be, she was not fulfilling her highest potential.

Because of the factors we have discussed, she could not understand or accept her full potential with her conscious mind, yet she still experienced the agony. And the pain of suffering without feeling there was any way out of the suffering actually led her to develop a very subtle death-wish, which has happened to many other spiritual people who were also trapped in a catch-22. This is expressed in the following quote:

. . . why Jesus, I am willing with all my heart to suffer all that I suffer—not only now—but for all eternity—if that was possible . . . All this is my will—I want to satiate Your Thirst with every single drop of blood that You can find in me . . . I beg of You only one thing—please do not take the trouble to return soon.—I am ready to wait for You for all eternity. (page 193-94)

What is hiding behind these words is the agony of a lifestream that knows it is not where it should be—because it is not experiencing God’s Presence where it is. Yet the lifestream is caught in the denial of God and cannot see how to overcome it. Christ represents a being who comes to bring the lifestream out of this catch-22 by forcing it to face its own denial of God. Yet if the lifestream is not willing to face this, it does not want Christ to come into its world. Instead, the outer personality wants to remain separated from Christ for all eternity, which is an indirect desire to remain in the consciousness of death indefinitely. This will inevitably lead to the spiritual death of the lifestream – the second death – and as such it is a death wish.

All spiritual people need to be very alert to any such death wish in their beings, and they need to realize that the ego can use their longing for God to reinforce this death wish. A spiritual person cannot simply “eat, drink and be merry” but needs a purpose to life. And when such a person feels no purpose or feels he or she is not fulfilling that purpose, it can lead to such agony that death seems to be the only escape—and with death I do not simply mean the death of the body but the death of the lifestream, the total cessation of being.

So the extreme outcome of the consciousness of spiritual death is that it makes people long for spiritual death, namely as the total disappearance of any sense of self. Yet the cause of this misguided longing is the misunderstanding of what self is. As I said, “with men this is impossible, but not with God, for with God all things are possible” (Mark 10:27). You cannot fulfill your purpose in life through your mortal self. Yet by letting that mortal self die while accepting your oneness with your higher self, you can indeed fulfill your purpose in life. If you seek to save your mortal self, you will lose your life, but if you are willing to lose your mortal life – your human sense of identity – for the sake of attaining union with Christ, you will find eternal life.

The conclusion is that people who feel stuck in a spiritual catch-22 need to acknowledge that there is only one cause for this condition. Your conscious self is still identifying itself as some aspect of the mortal self. Thus, the way out is not the spiritual death that leads to a cessation of being. The way out is to become conscious of the mortal self and then consciously let it go, whereby the Conscious You will naturally be reborn into its true identity as an extension of God’s Being.

The beauty of God’s creation is that there is NO being who can lose that potential—no matter how deeply or for how long it has been identified with the consciousness of anti-christ. The true hope brought to earth by Christ is that all have the potential to let the human self die on the cross and to be resurrected into their true identity. Yet because of free will, there is ONE insurmountable condition. YOU must consciously and willingly give up the ghost of the mortal self—even the most subtle manifestations of it.

Yet if you can do that, the God you think has abandoned you will appear in its full glory—only this will happen from within yourself as you and I exclaim together, “I and my Father are one!”

Kim: So what I hear you saying is that Mother Teresa’s real self had a true longing for oneness with you, but her outer personality – because it was so intertwined with the consciousness of death – actually wanted to avoid you at all costs, which is why she was anxious to remain separated from you. She even said:

If I ever become a saint—I will surely be one of “darkness.” I will continually be absent from heaven—to light the light of those in darkness on earth.

Jesus: Correct. Remember that the particular version of the consciousness of death that Mother Teresa had taken on was that of being a “good religious person.” Part of this consciousness is the image of doing selfless works in order to serve – and ultimately save – others.

Yet the concept that one human being can save another – or do ANYTHING that will led to the salvation of others – is a very subtle and dangerous illusion. Everything is based on the law of free will, so not even I or God can save a human being against that person’s free will.

Yet the consciousness that Mother Teresa had taken on was what I addressed when I said: “And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thy own eye” (Matthew 7:3). The most subtle outcome of the consciousness of death is that it causes people to always look outside themselves. Thus, religious people see God as the remote God and they think they can be saved only by doing something for that remote God. And they readily see the imperfections of others, so they easily think they can “buy” their own salvation by working for the salvation of others.

This leads to the consciousness that is always working to save others – such as Mother Teresa’s work for saving the poor and bringing souls to me – while ignoring the one thing that you truly can do for God, which is to save yourself by consciously and willingly letting the mortal self die.

Do you see how the consciousness of death fools religious people into thinking they are doing everything right in order to qualify for salvation, while in reality they are NOT doing the ONE thing that is required for salvation, namely that they overcome the consciousness of separation, the consciousness of death? It is the consciousness of death that keeps people outside the kingdom of God, yet this very consciousness has also created the illusion that you can win entry into the kingdom of God WITHOUT overcoming the consciousness of death, without putting on the wedding garment of the Christ consciousness.

What I need in this age is people who will first of all work on freeing themselves from this most subtle of all illusions, and who will then shout it from the housetops in order to awaken others. For the entire planet has actually moved beyond the point when this consciousness should have been exposed for all to see. So we have some catch-up to do, but with God – working through both me and all of you – all things are possible.

Question from Kim: Jesus, I would like to continue our discussion of Mother Teresa and especially her state of consciousness?

Answer from ascended master Jesus through Kim Michaels:

I want you to describe what you see as the consciousness Mother Teresa had taken on. [See Part 1]

Kim: Well, it seems like a very complex state of consciousness with many subtle undertones, so I will begin with the one thing that stood out as I read the book. I am actually happy to know Mother Teresa is a mature being and that she had only taken on this consciousness, since it makes it much easier to understand some of the inconsistencies I saw as I was reading the book. So in the following, I am not talking about Mother Teresa personally but about the state of consciousness.

To me, the first issue I noticed was the fact that Mother Teresa obviously has a very strong and genuine desire to serve God and she is willing to make great personal sacrifices to do so. This is something I see in many religious and spiritual people, so I think it applies to a large part of humanity. Yet I also see that in our desire to serve God, we are easily deceived by our imperfect desires. With imperfect desires I mean desires that we think are genuine but which are truly based on a dualistic belief about God, ourselves and the world.

For example, when I first discovered the spiritual path, I desired to serve God and the ascended masters, but there was a good deal of a self-serving need for recognition mixed in. Something it took me many years to fully surrender.

So I see in Mother Teresa’s approach the genuine desire but a strong mixture of a particular view of how her service should be carried out. In her case – as with many other religious people – it is clear that Mother Teresa simply cannot conceive of serving God outside her church. In my view this is inconsistent, especially when you consider that she receives her call in a very non-standard way for a Catholic. In other words, the call to start her mission is very much a mystical experience in which she feels God and you, Jesus, are calling her to a new type of mission for “the poorest of the poor.”

Her call is clearly to go beyond what the Church is doing, yet she cannot look at how to carry out the call in a universal way and has to look at it through the filter of her Catholic beliefs. She is, in essence, called to “boldly go where no nun has gone before,” and when I read her own description of the actual call, I sense that her call was to serve the poor in a truly universal way. She is called to leave her convent and go live among the poor in India, living as one of them. Well, to my knowledge most of the poor in India are not Catholics but Hindus. So could one not have interpreted her call to mean that she was to serve them as neither a Catholic nun nor as a Hindu but as a person who had truly understood and embodied the universality of Christ and your mission?

This thought doesn’t seem to have occurred to Mother Teresa, since from the very beginning, she sees her call as being very much within the framework of the Catholic church, although she does leave her old order and starts a new one.

Jesus, is it correct that she could have been more universal in carrying out her mission?

Jesus: It is correct that her call was to be truly universal in serving the poor, thus setting an example of how to serve people in the Spirit of Christ and NOT the outer religion that claims to represent me on earth.

She was not actually meant to completely disassociate herself from the Catholic Church, but it was the highest potential that she would have become even more universal in carrying out her call, thus having an effect of making the Church rediscover its roots in my universal call to preach my – non-sectarian – gospel to all people. As I explain throughout this website, it was NOT my intention to create a dogmatic church, such as the Jewish religion of that time, but a truly universal, non-exclusive spiritual movement.

Now, go on.

Kim: There are actually several passages in her letters where she is trying to convince her superiors – in order to get the Church’s approval of her mission – that her calling is from God, but she still says essentially that she will respect the decision of her superiors as the will of God. For example, at one point she says: “Before I begin I want to tell you that at one word that Your Grace would say I am ready to never consider again any of those strange thoughts which have been coming continually.” To me this indicates that she is willing to put the outer church before her inner, mystical experiences—something a true mystic would not do.

Now, she is also very clear in stating that she is convinced her superiors will eventually agree that her calling is the will of God – although she can’t understand what is taking them so long – yet she does actually say that if her superiors had refused to give her permission, she would not have started her mission. It even sounds like there is a part of her that would have been relieved to remain a typical nun. I obviously don’t know what she would have done had they refused her pleas, but according to her own statements, she seems to be saying that she will accept the Church and her superiors as the final authority in the matter.

This, of course, is where I fundamentally disagree with her approach. If I had not disagreed, I would never have started this website—which obviously does not have the approval of any Christian church and probably never will. My point being that I believe that while we should not disregard those who have experience and insight in spiritual matters, we must be first and foremost true to who we are and what we get from within—being very careful to discern that we are not being deceived by our egos. This is what I saw in your life, Jesus, and obviously all who walk the path of Christhood need to follow your example.

You obviously put your calling from God before any earthly authority, or the scribes and the Pharisees would have caused you to abort your mission. So what I am seeing here is that there is a very old consciousness on this planet of thinking that in serving God, we must adhere to certain standards or a certain authority in this world. People honestly believe they are following the will of God, but they don’t realize that they have – subconsciously – superimposed a man-made mental image upon what they see as the will of God. Thus, God cannot actually communicate his will to them without violating their free will.

I very vividly remember going through a period in which I was seriously contemplating what the will of God was for my life and actually saying to God, “I am willing to do whatever you want, just tell me what your will is.” After several months, I got a very clear message from my higher self, stating, “What if the will of God is for you to make your own decisions?” That was a complete paradigm shift for me, and it took me years to get my mind around what that actually meant and what you meant when you said, “My father worketh hitherto and I work.”

In other words, we are created to be co-creators with God, so following God’s will is NOT a matter of turning ourselves into robots who follow some exterior voice in the sky that tells us how to do everything. It is a matter of realigning our outer minds with the overall framework of our Divine plan and then making our own decisions within that framework, thus expressing our God-given (as opposed to the ego-based) individuality in our decisions. It is a matter of bringing our lower being and conscious will into perfect harmony with our higher being and greater will, so we can say as you did, “I and my father – meaning our higher selves – are one!”

It is very significant to me that when Mother Teresa received her call, she felt a spiritual Presence with her constantly for six months, but when she actually started her mission, she began to experience the interior darkness that followed her for 50 years. To me this signifies that her call was a genuine call, but that she superimposed her Catholic mindset upon it and thus did not actually implement it the way it was meant to be implemented.

Since she was not open to seeing this with her outer mind, how could her higher self, God or you communicate that to her? To me the only way was to leave her alone, thus signaling to her that she was going in the wrong direction and that she needed to get back to the open and listening state of mind that she had when she received her call. In other words, when she received her call, she was willing to listen for something that went beyond Catholic doctrine, but in carrying out her call, she seems to have closed her mind to going too far beyond the outer church.

I have seen in numerous people that they have a spiritual awakening because they are genuinely seeking answers. Yet then they find a religion, guru or spiritual teaching, and now they think this will give them all the answers they will ever need. In other words, they took a step forward on the path because they were seeking, but now they think they have found everything they need, so now they are not seeking anymore. To me this stops your growth and I think we always need to be seeking for a higher understanding.

So to me what happens is that people are genuinely seeking, but then they are deceived by their egos into thinking they no longer need to seek beyond their present framework – or mental box – and this stops their growth. I have seen people stay at a certain level for decades, so based on that it doesn’t surprise me that Mother Teresa could experience her interior darkness for 50 years. It wasn’t actually that God had left her, but that she had left the consciousness of being open, of seeking with the open heart and the childlike mind. So she could no longer experience God’s Presence.

Basically, what I see is the tendency to superimpose a human construct – a mental image – upon God and our genuine desire to come closer to God. By doing so – and by sticking with this image without questioning it – we make it impossible for us to move closer to God and thus often feel abandoned or unwanted. We put ourselves in a catch-22 and there is no escape until we fundamentally change our approach to God.

Mother Teresa actually says: “I have no faith. I dare not utter the words and thoughts that crowd my heart and make me suffer untold agony. So many untold questions live within me. I am afraid to uncover them because of the blasphemy. She has clearly adopted an image of God that cannot answer all of her questions, but because she refuses to question the image itself, she cannot resolve her questions and move forward. Thus, she remains stuck in this catch-22.

The real question is whether we will obey the first two commandments. Will we reach for the real God or will we settle for a man-made God? Will we reach beyond all graven images, or will we turn one such image into a substitute for the real God, thus worshipping the dead image instead of always reaching beyond all images for the Living God? Will we allow Christ to take us beyond our mental images or will we demand that Christ should conform to our images in this world?

Am I making any sense, Jesus?

Jesus: You have described the Alpha aspect of the equation, now describe the Omega aspect.

Kim: You are making me work for this, aren’t you?

Jesus: No, I am simply testing whether the disciple has multiplied his talents and has thus made worthy use of what he has received from the teacher. Anyone who sincerely studies this website and applies its teachings should eventually be able to find answers from within—and obviously that must apply to you as well.

Kim: I appreciate that. Well, what I see as the Omega side of the equation is the entire issue of poverty and how Christ would want to approach this. To me it is obvious that you want to remove poverty from this planet. You even said that you have come that all might have life and that more abundantly. So it is obvious to me that in the end, poverty has to go. And it is also obvious to me that Mother Teresa’s mission was not aimed at achieving that.

She makes a very telling statement in one of her letters: “The poor are bitter and suffering because they have not got the happiness that poverty should bring if borne for Christ.” In other words, she does not see it as her mission to remove poverty but to enable people to bear it as a sacrifice in this world with the promise of a better hereafter.

To me this links to what I talked about above, but it is a bit subtle. To me the essence is that we are designed to be co-creators with God, which has the ultimate goal of bringing God’s kingdom to earth—the abundant life you spoke about, which I see as both spiritual and material abundance, a Golden Age. Yet if we superimpose a dualistic mental image on our service to God, we abort that goal.

We do this because in order for God’s kingdom to be manifest on earth, most current conditions will have to change and some of them will have to change drastically. Yet a dualistic image comes from the consciousness that does not want change, but wants to maintain status quo. The ego wants to stay where it is comfortable because it feels it has things under control.

So in order to bring God’s kingdom, we have to be wiling to go beyond ALL of our mental images. And when we set limits for our willingness to question our images, we are indirectly serving to maintain a status quo that is less than God’s kingdom on this planet. We are, so to speak, letting current conditions become the authority that blocks God’s desire to give us the kingdom and we block that kingdom. We are letting the Mother, Omega, aspect take authority over the Father, Alpha, aspect.

I remember Thomas More saying, “I am the king’s good servant—but God’s first.” Yet we often do the opposite, thinking we can serve some earthly image before God and still do God’s work.

I am not actually saying Mother Teresa’s mission was wrong in the sense that I do believe Christ wants to alleviate the suffering of the poor in the short run. This is the principle of giving people a cup of cold water in Christ’s name, and of God not giving you a stone when you need bread. So I think that aspect of her mission was okay, but as she gained more publicity, she had the opportunity to go further and bring attention to the need to remove poverty.

Yet because of her image of Christ, she could not make that leap and instead she almost became a tool for maintaining status quo, in which a few nations are very rich while the population in many countries live in a state of poverty that I think God finds absolutely unacceptable.

Why do we have such an unequal distribution of wealth? Why does our western civilization – with all of its advanced technology and riches – tolerate that so many people live in poverty? It is partly because there is a power elite who actually want the majority of the world’s population to be poor so they can seem richer and more powerful in comparison. But it is also because we, the ordinary citizens in the western world, have been seduced by our comfortable lifestyles into accepting poverty in other parts of the world.

We have allowed ourselves to be seduced by the power elite that poverty is necessary or inevitable, while in reality it is an artificially created state that allows some very large multinational corporations to exploit the resources in some countries in order to make an insane profit for their shareholders. We, the people in the West, have been bought off and lulled asleep by having a comfortable lifestyle that we are reluctant to give up.

Yet I don’t think we have to give it up, we simply need to decide that we will not accept this inequality, and change society so a small elite can no longer exploit the general population. When that is overcome, there will be plenty of resources to give every human being a reasonable lifestyle.

So I think organizations like Mother Teresa’s are doing a valid work, yet if they do not seek to raise awareness of the need to remove poverty and its causes, they are actually helping to maintain it. Which almost becomes a codependent relationship, because if there were no poor that needed assistance, why would people in the West feel impelled to donate to these organizations and thus how could they survive?

Which is part of the whole consciousness we are discussing of raising an institution on earth as being an end in itself rather than a means to an end. A typical example is the Catholic church. You, Jesus, gave your life to show us that we don’t need an outer church in order to be saved, because the kingdom of God is within us. The Catholic church took away that purpose by inserting itself between people and salvation. Your goal was to make people spiritually self-sufficient so they don’t need anything outside themselves. Yet the church is aimed at sustaining itself and thus does not want people to become self-sufficient.

Again, I am not speaking against charitable organizations, but I think we need to recognize that such organizations do allow many people in the West to “buy” peace of mind by feeling they are doing something for the poor by simply writing a check. Many people in the West have made money by playing the game set up by the power elite and the big corporations, for example in the stock market. Yet this system is precisely what keeps a majority of the world’s population in poverty. So by donating a part of their money to a charitable organization, people can feel they are doing something for the poor, and thus they don’t have to start a revolution that can change the status quo.

Any comments, Jesus?

Jesus: That will do for now. As Mother Mary explains, everything in the world of form is created from the interplay of the Divine Father – Alpha – and the Divine Mother – Omega – as the expanding and contracting forces. Yet for a sustainable creation to occur, the two must be balanced by the Divine Son, namely the universal Christ mind expressed through God’s co-creators.

It is indeed the goal of Christ to eliminate all poverty on earth and to give all people a spiritually and materially abundant life. So the highest potential for Mother Teresa’ mission was that she would both alleviate the immediate suffering of the poor while contributing to an awareness that the elimination of poverty needs to become a declared goal of the world-wide community.

Why do you think she could not fulfill that potential?

Kim: Well, I would have to say that it was because she did not see that it is your goal to eliminate poverty on earth.

She didn’t see this because she had an image of you and your mission that is fundamentally different from your teachings on this website. From an early point in the book, I was struck by how much Mother Teresa focused on your suffering on the cross. It seems that whenever she thought of you, she saw you hanging on the cross and suffering for the sins of humanity—doing this because you had an insatiable thirst for saving lifestreams. She was so focused on that one remark, “I thirst,” almost to the point of ignoring everything else you said. She even says, “The general end of the Missionaries of Charity is to satiate the thirst of Jesus Christ on the cross for Love and souls.”

In many of her letters, she seems to glorify suffering and she literally makes it sound like her basic belief is that your suffering on the cross is what “bought” people’s salvation. It seems to be a belief rooted in the concept of sacrifice, such as the animal sacrifices practiced by the Jews at your time. The idea seems to be that because people have sinned – causing suffering on earth – someone has to suffer even more to make up for it. Previous suffering can only be erased by more suffering. So by her own suffering and by the suffering of the members of her order, they are buying souls for you. The more they suffer, the more souls will be saved.

I have always found this idea very strange—that God wants you and us to suffer and that suffering can lead to salvation, as if two wrongs can make a right. I think suffering is caused by separation from God (which is the essence of all sin), so how can more suffering overcome that separation? Yet the real point here is that I think her basic approach to life was that you, Jesus, are primarily concerned about saving souls, which is something that happens after we die. So it isn’t really important what happens in this world, it only matters that people can enter heaven after they die.

She says, “The joy of loving Jesus comes from sharing in his sufferings. So do not allow yourself to be troubled or distressed, but believe in the joy of the Resurrection. In all of our lives, as in the life of Jesus, the Resurrection has to come, the joy of Easter has to dawn.” In other words, don’t worry about your suffering, for by your suffering you earn the resurrection, as if the resurrection is guaranteed. I think that is a very subtle mentality that very much contributes to maintaining the status quo, where so much of life on earth is dominated by the consciousness of duality and thus we cannot remove suffering.

I can’t quite understand how she can actually believe this and then still dedicate her life to alleviating the suffering of the poor. It almost seems that if she really believes what she says about suffering and the resurrection, she should let them suffer, for the more they suffer, the more they share in your passion and the more they are guaranteed the resurrection. Yet my point is that she is focused on alleviating the suffering of the poor without removing the cause of poverty by changing status quo.

To my knowledge this is part of the Catholic mindset, and I think it played a big part in the Church’s history and actually helped keep Europe in the Dark Ages for a thousand years. I think this consciousness very much serves to maintain the status quo that gives the power elite so much influence in this world. Because the spiritual people are fooled into looking to the next world and thus not exercising their authority in this world—the authority to challenge the power elite and say that enough is enough. We do not do what you did and challenge the powers that be, thinking it is enough to be “good Christians” and focus on a world to come.

Am I on the right track?

Jesus: You are correct that my suffering on the cross was just a temporary phenomenon that should have no significance for modern Christians.

However, I do feel the suffering of the poor, and that was what Mother Teresa tuned in to in order to get the motivation for starting her mission. Nevertheless, you are correct in that her focus on my suffering was disproportionate and that she was incorrect in thinking two wrongs can make a right and that her own suffering could somehow save lifestreams.

What she could do – and what was the real cause of her personal suffering – was to take on the consciousness that keeps people separated from God—that keeps them spiritually poor. Yet she would obviously have done more if she had worked through that consciousness and thus been able to inspire others to overcome it as well.

So the question is why she was not able to do this, and that is why I want you to go a bit further. What is the image of Christ that you are talking about?

Kim: Oh, I see it! It is exactly the consciousness that wants to keep you out of this world, so you cannot be the judgment and overthrow the forces of anti-christ. This is the consciousness that challenged you through the scribes, Pharisees and temple priests and accused you of blasphemy. They were essentially saying that the Christ is acceptable as a concept beyond this world, but that the Christ should stay out of this world and leave it to the forces of anti-christ. They were looking forward to the coming of the Messiah, but only in the sense that it was a future event. When you actually came in the flesh, they wanted you out of this world so you could not overthrow status quo in which they were in control.

That is why they have created the consciousness that claiming to be the Christ in embodiment is blasphemy—a viewpoint that most mainstream Christian churches would agree with even today. I mean, I regularly get e-mails from Christians who accuse me of blasphemy because I pretend to be you.

It is like when the devil tempted you by offering you all the kingdoms of this world if you would worship him—meaning that you would take upon you the consciousness of separation, which says that this world belongs to those who have separated themselves from God and that the Christ has no right to come here and overturn their tables in the temple.

This is a consciousness that superimposes a mental – man-made, dualistic – image upon the Living Christ, thus demanding that Christ conform to the image instead of challenging ALL graven images. It is failing the second challenge of Christ by seeking to force Christ into our mental box instead of allowing our human identity to die so we can truly follow Christ.

I can see why this is a very powerful collective consciousness on this planet, which makes it easy to see why Mother Teresa could not overcome it on her own. I assume it will take many people to challenge this consciousness, probably the ten thousand you are talking about.

Anything I have left out?

Jesus: What is the essence of this consciousness—what is it actually saying?

Kim: Are you referring to pride?

Jesus: Yes!

Kim: Well, the consciousness is essentially saying that “We know better than God how this world should be run, so we don’t want the Christ to come in and overturn our tables and expose our carefully crafted lies. We don’t want the reality of Christ, we want to keep our sophisticated mental images that justify us doing what we want to do in this world.” So it is a consciousness of spiritual pride, which I see as the ultimate perversion of the Christ mind, which is completely humble in its oneness with God’s reality.

The Christ mind is designed to keep us one with the reality of God, so the consciousness of anti-christ not only keeps us separate but makes us feel we are absolutely right in our separation. That is why so many religions have this consciousness that their image of God is the only true one, that their scriptures are infallible and that only members of their religion will be saved. This is obviously the mindset of the Catholic Church, and the book demonstrates how both Mother Teresa and her superiors are blinded by the belief in the superiority of the Catholic Church. I think this plays a major role in her inability to look beyond Catholic doctrine for a deeper understanding of her affliction.

To me this is incredibly dangerous, because once people are trapped in this mindset, it is extremely difficult for them to free themselves. I think Mother Teresa’s condition demonstrates this with incredible clarity—for anyone with an open mind.

I know many people will probably resist any talk of Mother Teresa and pride, and I would too before I read the book. However, I do see Mother Teresa’s higher being as being perfectly humble. I also see that the consciousness she took on is NOT humble and the book does expose certain elements of pride. For example, she says, “I have been burning with longing to love him as he has never been loved before.” She also says, “I want to become a saint, by satiating the thirst of Jesus for love and souls. And there is another big desire—to give the Mother Church many a saint from our society.” She further says, “As for myself, there is but one desire, to love God as he has never been loved.”

I know this might sound innocent, and the book portrays it as a sign of her sainthood. But I see it as the expression of a dualistic view, where one is comparing oneself to others, seeking to demonstrate that one loves Christ or God more than any other human being, thus oneself or one’s church is superior to all others. I think we need to overcome this mentality of judging and simply focus on being who we are, and in expressing our unique God-given individuality, there is no need for comparisons. How can one expression of uniqueness be more than another expression of uniqueness?

Behind this mentality of comparison is the belief that “my view of God and salvation is infallible and superior to all others, thus it could not possibly be wrong.” This is a complete unwillingness to consider that one might be wrong or that one might need to expand one’s understanding beyond a certain framework. I think this must have played a big part in why Mother Teresa could not make her mission more universal but could only see it as being within the Catholic Church.

For example, in the beginning of the book, she is very convinced that her call and visions are from God and are absolutely true. But I think we always need to be open to the fact that any vision we have can be influenced by our state of consciousness and thus we can later acquire a deeper understanding of our vision—a process that will continue as long as we are in embodiment.

Is this what you mean, and is this the consciousness you want the spiritual people to challenge?

Jesus: Correct. For there to be a revolutionary change in the collective consciousness, the most spiritually aware people must step forward and dare to challenge this consciousness in all of its obvious and subtle manifestations. Someone must dare to speak out and expose the consciousness that “we know better than God” that causes people to reject the Living Truth and the Living Word of Christ, preferring a dead word that makes them feel comfortable.

The real issue here is that the most spiritual people need to demonstrate that they will go beyond wearing religion as an overcoat—that they will become one with the Spirit of Truth and thus become “the way, the truth and the life.” Mother Teresa is seen as a great saint, and the book aims to underscore this image by showing that despite the fact that she felt her “interior darkness,” she still did all these outer works and remained loyal to the Catholic Church.

The hidden message is that it is admirable and saintly to put on a facade of being a good religious person while actually feeling different inside. Even Mother Teresa herself admitted that she was putting on a front and that if people knew what she really felt, they would see it as hypocrisy. [Mother teresa said to one of her confessors: “Rev. Father Miranda will tell you what I said. I spoke as if my heart was in love with God, tender, personal love. If you were in the place of Fr. Miranda you would have said—what hypocrisy.”]

One of the most dangerous effects of the consciousness we are addressing is precisely that it enables people to become a member of an outer religion and believe that as a result, their salvation is guaranteed, and thus they don’t have to remove the beam from their own eyes by challenging their egos and the consciousness of anti-christ. They don’t have to overcome the psychological condition that makes them a house divided against itself, they don’t have to bring their inner and outer life into harmony.

This is the complete insanity – caused by the complete spiritual blindness of the duality consciousness – that causes people to believe that if they appear good according to a standard defined by a religion on earth, God simply has to save them. It is the belief that if they can fool other people, they can also fool God. Yet those who do not wear the wedding garment of the Christ consciousness will not be allowed into the wedding feast but must remain in the outer darkness created by the illusions they refuse to surrender.

This is precisely the attitude that the Catholic Church has been based on from its inception—of pretending to be a good religious person by conforming to certain outer rules – wearing one’s religion as an overcoat – while not truly integrating and living one’s religious beliefs. This is the hypocrisy of the scribes and Pharisees that I challenged repeatedly, even stating clearly that unless your righteousness – meaning that you truly live your beliefs – exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you cannot enter heaven.

What I have always been looking for is people who are willing to remove the beam from their own eyes first and who are then willing to go out and demonstrate that path – the straight and narrow way – to the world. On the one hand, Mother Teresa was sincerely longing to walk the true path of becoming one with me, but on the other hand she held on to certain beliefs that made this oneness impossible and thus caused her interior struggle. She experienced this as me abandoning her, but in reality it was her unwillingness to question everything that caused her to abandon me and cut herself off from the oneness that I continually offer to anyone who will receive it with the open heart and mind of a child.

For this book to attempt to glorify her condition is a clear demonstration of just how far the Catholic mindset is from the reality of who I am and why I came to this planet. I did NOT come to this planet to create a religion of hypocrites, who honor me with their lips but whose hearts are far from me. I came to raise up those who are genuine in their spiritual quest and who are willing to work for setting all of humanity free from the consciousness of anti-christ that keeps people separated from their God.

This also explains why Saint Germain said in California that some people have been trapped in charitable organizations, such as the Missionaries of Charity. There are many people who are not ready to manifest Christhood, and for them it can be right to work in charitable organizations for it allows them to balance karma. Yet those who are close to manifesting Christhood need to be very careful that their genuine desire to serve God does not deceive them into dedicating their lives to a charitable organization – or any other endeavor – that although doing valuable work, still serves to maintain status quo.

As a Christed being, you are NOT here to maintain status quo or to bring about evolutionary change. You are here to overturn the tables of the moneychangers in all aspects of society so you can open the way for a revolutionary change in consciousness. THAT is why I came to this planet. THAT is why I gave my life—NOT to help people cope with suffering but to empower them to remove the cause of suffering and bring the abundant life to earth.

I did not even come to save souls. I came to give people the choice between the consciousness of Christ and the consciousness of anti-christ, for only when people – knowingly – choose the Life of Christ will they qualify for salvation. I cannot save anyone against their free will, nor do I want to.

However, I do have a thirst for seeing people have a real choice because they have encountered the Living Truth and the Living Word of Christ—because someone has decided to become the open door for that flow of the Holy Spirit!

Kim: To address the questions from the beginning, will all spiritual seekers have such challenges and experience a period of prolonged darkness as they move toward Christhood?

Jesus: ALL spiritual seekers who want to attain Christhood have to surrender and leave behind ALL of the mental images that spring from the consciousness of anti-christ. So all face the challenge to see these images and then let them go. However, it is not necessary that this process leads to any interior darkness or suffering.

Any time you experience less than peace and joy, you should realize that this condition is caused by something you have not surrendered. And in most cases, suffering is caused by the fact that you have not been willing to look at a false belief or expectation, so you are resisting growth. You should actually have moved beyond that block, but because you have not seen and surrendered it, the tension keeps building and you experience it as lack of peace and joy or other forms of suffering.

How long will such a condition go on? For as long as you decide not to look at and surrender the belief that blocks your growth and keeps you trapped in a catch-22. It can be over in an instant, or it can go on for 50 years or 50 lifetimes—the choice is yours!

I want all who struggle with such conditions to contemplate Mother Teresa’s example, for she does demonstrate how intense such suffering can be. She also demonstrates that some people maintain the suffering precisely because they will not see that it is self-created. The major block for Mother Teresa was that she actually thought her suffering was put upon her by me or God. And since she did not admit that it was a self-created condition, she felt she could do nothing to escape it.

This is very much a product of the consciousness we have been discussing. People will build mental images of God and then superimpose them upon God. They then interpret everything that happens to them through the filter of those images and thus think they are victims of external conditions.

In Mother Teresa’s case, she believed she had surrendered herself completely to God, yet as Kim pointed out, she had surrendered herself to a man-made image of God. Thus, when she started suffering, she had to interpret this as a condition put upon her by God. This led to only one possible conclusion, namely that God or I wanted her to suffer, making her feel her only option was to learn to live with it and even “love the darkness,” which of course is not truly possible.

Let me make it absolutely clear that neither God nor I want ANYONE to suffer for even a second. We want all people to be free, but this can happen ONLY through people’s free-will choices. The suffering of one person CANNOT “buy” the freedom of another—each person is responsible for his or her choices and will ONLY escape suffering by consciously undoing the choices that caused their suffering. People can “choose life” only when they are willing to take full responsibility for themselves and admit that ALL limitations on earth are created by the individual and by humankind collectively, thus MUST be uncreated by people.

One of the most subtle effects of the consciousness we are discussing here is precisely that it makes people believe they are victims of external conditions—be it the devil in this world or the angry God in the sky. In reality, people are the victims of their own choices, and thus they ALWAYS have the option to change ANY condition by making a better choice, by choosing the consciousness of LIFE over the consciousness of death.

I sincerely hope that some of the people who love Mother Teresa will take these teachings to heart and thus make a real contribution to completing the work she so courageously begun, namely the work of setting people free from the spiritual poverty that is caused by the false beliefs that keep them separated from the kingdom of God – the abundant life – that is within them.

What she took on was the consciousness of separation that has kept humankind separated from God for a very long time. This is the consciousness which says that there is an impenetrable barrier between God and man and that only Christ can cross it but that this happened only once. If you study Mother Teresa’s life and philosophy, you will see that she made a very sincere effort to cross that barrier and attain a greater oneness with me—according to her vision of me. She also encouraged all members of her order to attain a sense of oneness with me, which some have indeed achieved. Yet her image of me prevented her from fully attaining oneness with me.

Mother Teresa was indeed correct in seeing that I feel the suffering of all people on earth because I am one with all people on earth, for as I said, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Thus, by serving the poor, you are indeed serving me—in the Omega aspect as explained above. What I need is for those who will go further and also attain oneness with me in the Alpha aspect—by going beyond all man-made images of Christ until they encounter and become one with the Living Christ that I AM.

Through her work, Mother Teresa did make progress in terms of resolving part of the state of consciousness that causes separation, although she did not get to the point where she could feel this personally, for reasons explained above. Yet she did not take this on and struggle with it for 50 years in order to have other people admire her for struggling with it. She took it on in order to make it easier for other people to overcome it—so get on with overcoming it. Nothing is more sad for a teacher than when the students do not dare to exceed the teacher—a problem I know something about myself, although I look forward to it changing in the foreseeable future by the students of this website living my teachings.

The motto of the ascended masters is that what one has done, all can do. Thus, all who sincerely apply themselves can receive Christ wisdom from within themselves. And when they express it, they will make a real contribution to changing the world.

 

Mother Teresa’s “interior darkness” – Part 3 – The subtle denial of God

 Kim: Jesus, I have had several people ask about the new book, Come Be My Light, that talks about the “interior darkness” that affected Mother Teresa for almost 50 years. People seem to be shocked that a person who is universally recognized as such a great humanitarian and such a devoutly religious person could have had to struggle with feeling empty, doubting God’s existence and feeling abandoned by God and by you. 

It seems difficult for people to grasp how a person of her stature could be afflicted by doubt. Here are some of the questions people have:

• Is such a lengthy dark night experience “normal” on the road to Christhood?  That is, is this something that can be anticipated by most sincere spiritual seekers on the path?  
• Is such a prolonged period of suffering really necessary or is it perhaps her ego that influenced the dark night experience?  
• Could it be she volunteered to have this experience to demonstrate how one could still practice the presence of God in one’s daily life despite the feelings of spiritual emptiness? 
• Could it be that the Catholic doctrines of separation from God and guilt influenced this as well?
• Is it in part karmic?”

I know you wanted to comment on this, so I have read the book and simply want to give you the opportunity to comment.

Answer from scended master Jesus through Kim Michaels:

I will comment on the issue, but I want to approach it differently than a normal question. I first want you, Kim, to describe what you think about the issue.

Kim: Where do you want me to start?

Jesus: Begin by describing your experience of reading the book.

Kim: Well, I feel I should begin by saying that prior to reading the book, I knew relatively little about Mother Teresa. This doesn’t imply any kind of judgment on my part, I had simply never been intuitively prompted to look into her life. I obviously knew about here great humanitarian achievements and both admired and respected her for that. I have later learned that some detractors seek to cast doubt upon her work and her organization, but I think the Nobel Prize committee is very thorough in researching the people they award the Peace Prize, so it seems to me her work and organization are genuine.

I knew Mother Teresa was a very orthodox Catholic, and for that reason – being that I didn’t grow up in a Catholic culture – I didn’t see her as a particularly spiritual person but as a religious person. To me the difference is that a religious person stays within a particular religion and its doctrines, whereas a spiritual person seeks truth wherever it can be found. I did, however, know that she received the call to start her mission as the result of an inner vision, a locution as it is called, and that didn’t actually sound like an orthodox Catholic since my understanding is that only the Pope is supposed to communicate with God.

So when I heard about the book and her struggles, I wasn’t shocked. I actually thought it was a good sign that perhaps Mother Teresa was more spiritual than I had thought. It sounded like she was much more of a mystic, and to me a mystic is a person who approaches spirituality in a universal way—the meaning of “Catholic” actually being “universal.” So I started reading the book with a sense of positive expectation, hoping it would reveal something about the psychology of spiritual growth. I guess that expectation was fulfilled, although certainly not in the way I had expected.

Normally, I love reading spiritual books and plough right through them. But this book was one of the most difficult books I have ever read. I literally had to force myself to read it, and if it hadn’t been for the fact that I knew you wanted to comment on it, I wouldn’t have finished it.

There are several reasons why I found the book difficult to read. One simple one is that the book is extremely repetitive. It contains Mother Teresa’s letters to her confessors, but the problem she had basically remained the same for the entire time, so it is the same questions and statements over and over again. Mother Teresa’s understanding of her problem did not seem to change or be expanded for five decades, and that is almost mind-boggling to me. At the same time, her various confessors were unable to help her, except for one priest who helped her to “love the darkness” and accept that she could do nothing to rise above it.

Another factor is that I thought the book would simply give Mother Teresa’s writings. However, the book was compiled and edited – who knows how much – by a Father Kolodiejchuk who is in charge of her beatification. And it quickly becomes apparent that this isn’t a spiritual book, but a Catholic book. It is not enough to let Mother Teresa’s writings stand on their own, the Father has to introduce every letter, and afterwards he has to analyze it and put it in its “proper” context.

It is quite obvious that the book is carefully crafted to present Mother Teresa’s struggle in the “proper” Catholic context so that the reader will – hopefully – make the proper Catholic conclusion, including seeing Mother Teresa as an even greater saint for having had this interior struggle and still done everything she did for the poor. So the Father’s writings are somewhat repetitive and contradictory, where he has to present every remark she makes as a sign of her sainthood—which gets a bit hollow for a non-Catholic.

However, what really made the book difficult – even painful – to read is that it quickly became obvious to me that Mother Teresa was not the mystic I had hoped for. Instead, she is an extreme example of the kind of people I have been very aware of since childhood, partly because my father was a prime example. These are people who are suffering – spiritually, psychologically – but the suffering is all internal, and it is caused by an inner condition, namely that these people are stuck in a certain world view. And because they cannot – will not – see beyond it, they cannot escape the suffering.

I mean, I have great compassion for these people, and I wish there was a way to help them. As I read the book, I felt great compassion for Mother Teresa. Here is a person who has obviously dedicated her life to God and Jesus – as she sees them – and who is – from a normal perspective – completely selfless in serving the poor. So I really wish she could have gone through life without feeling empty and left by God and you, but instead she suffers for 50 years in a way that seems so intense you just wish she could get over it.

To me this was especially painful because according to my life experience her problem would have been relatively easy to solve. Her suffering was all interior, it was all psychological, whereby I mean that it was all caused by a condition in her mind, and that condition was a specific image of God. This image was partly a result of her upbringing in the Catholic church but also partly due to some ideas that she herself had either defined or accepted from somewhere I think is beyond mainstream Catholic doctrine.

So from my perspective, the situation is quite simple. After having struggled with his problem for some time, the natural reaction would be to say, “I haven’t overcome this with the approach I have taken so far, so let me take a different approach!” I mean, she seems to have sincerely longed to overcome the condition, and if she had not overcome it by telling her Catholic confessors, my approach would have been to recognize that I lacked an understanding of the problem. So I would have sought out that understanding, even if that meant going beyond the mental box of the Catholic church.

Yet Mother Teresa cannot even conceive of doing so, and as a result her condition only deepens. She even reasons herself into thinking that you, Jesus, want here to suffer like this and that by suffering she is fulfilling your thirst for the salvation of lifestreams, almost making it sound like she believes that by her suffering she is “buying” lifestreams for God. At one point a priest makes her accept that she can never overcome her suffering, so she might as well love it, which seems to comfort her but also makes her give up on all attempts to overcome the condition.

To me this is simply nothing but mind-boggling and it is an approach to life that is completely and utterly alien to me. I mean, in your latest dictation, Jesus, you asked how long it would take for people to remove a pebble from their shoe instead of continuing to walks with the pain. To me this is obvious, but apparently not to Mother Teresa.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to put her down. I understand that she is a different type of person than I am, and thus what is easy for me was not easy – or even possible – for her. There are no doubt things she did that I would have found it difficult to do. Nevertheless, you wanted me to describe my experience of reading the book, and this is what I experienced. I literally wanted to shake Mother Teresa and say, “Just try something new instead of continuing to repeat what Einstein called the insanity of doing the same thing while expecting different results!”

So in summary, I was hoping that the book would be of assistance to spiritual seekers by showing how one could overcome this condition of doubt, interior darkness and emptiness, which I know afflicts many sincere people. Yet instead, the book ends without any form of resolution—unless you consider it a resolution that Mother Teresa learned to love the darkness and still carried on her humanitarian work while remaining faithful to the Catholic church which, in my observation, was partly the cause of her condition.

So I think spiritual seekers who read this book and don’t have the teachings of the ascended masters will feel like they are actually more confused or doubtful than they were before they read it. Unless they can blindly accept the Catholic church as the only road to salvation and thus endure any kind of suffering because they believe it will all be better in heaven—which seems to have been Mother Teresa’s approach.

In other words, what disappointed me the most was that the book has absolutely no resolution whatsoever. Again, unless you consider it a resolution that people should blindly accept the Church and trust that their suffering will buy them a better salvation. And to me, that is actually the hidden message in the book.

It is like the editor is saying, “I know a lot of you Catholics out there have your doubts about the Church and its image of God, but look at this great humanitarian and consider how much more she did than you can ever do. And then look how much she suffered from her interior afflictions. Yet if she could go through such intense suffering without ever questioning the Church, trusting that everything would be better once she got to heaven, then shouldn’t you be able to accept the Church and its doctrines without question?”

I know I am getting carried away, but am I completely off track, Jesus?

Jesus: No, you have correctly identified one of the hidden messages in the book, a message that has been conveyed by the Church since it began to use the concepts of saints. There are also positive messages from the concept of saints, but this is one of the negative ones in that it pacifies people and directly discourages them from pursuing their personal Christhood.

The fact is that for decades, Catholic Church leaders have used Mother Teresa as a propaganda tool, even in terms of gaining back some of the credibility through her that they lost through the sexual abuse by male priests. This is somewhat of an abuse of Mother Teresa, for seeking to promote the church through the example of a women while being unwilling to give women equal status in the church is hypocrisy.

As you also illustrate, an inescapable part of Christhood is that you are willing to question everything, which includes outer doctrines but also your own inner beliefs and approach to life. If you are not willing to question, how can you ever identify the beam in your own eye? And if you don’t identify it, how can you possibly remove it?

You are also correct that what seems easy for you was impossible for Mother Teresa, but you are not correct in saying that it is because she is a different kind of person than you are. What I mean here is that there is no fundamental difference between one person and another in that all have the potential to overcome their mental box and move closer to Christhood—which is a condition where you have left behind ALL mental boxes.

So all have the potential to shift their approach to life and adopt an approach that leads to growth rather than stillstand—the stillstand that will inevitably cause inner suffering because you are fighting against the River of Life itself. And in order to do that, you have to constantly resist the forward movement, the self-transcendence, that IS life. This causes constant strain that you experience as suffering of various kinds.

Kim, I now want you to comment on what you see as the inner or underlying cause of Mother Teresa’s condition.

Kim: Well, that was something I simply couldn’t understand as I read the first part of the book, but towards the end, I think I saw it more clearly—which shows the value of reading the whole thing even though it was difficult.

Jesus: Stop feeling sorry for yourself; it is part of your job to read things like this.

Kim: Jesus, are you telling me to love my suffering :)?

Jesus: No, I am telling you to change your approach so you don’t suffer. I appreciate that you are being humorous here, but the fact is that YOU made it difficult for yourself to read the book because you have an attachment to helping the kind of people who are stuck in the mindset you clearly see. And when you feel you can’t help them, you want to withdraw instead of feeling the pain of seeing them stuck.

So what you need to do personally, Kim, is to overcome any attachment to helping such people. It helps neither them nor you that you feel pain from seeing them stuck when – in reality – they are stuck because they are exercising their free will their way. You are not stuck because you are exercising your free will your way, which means you need to respect both their choices and your own choices so you feel no attachment and no pain because others make choices that cause them pain. God has given them free will, and if they make the kind of choices that get them stuck, why should you feel frustrated about that—unless you somehow feel responsible for them, which is inconsistent with your understanding of and respect for free will.

Do you see what I am saying here? You are in a position as a spiritual teacher, and as such it is essential for you NOT to feel attached to “saving” people. Your job is to bring forth spiritual teachings and make them as easy to understand as possible—and then you leave it up to people what they do with it. If you have a desire to “shake” people awake, you are not content to let the law of free will work itself out one way or another.

And that is the same kind of mindset that you – correctly – identified in Mother Teresa. In her case it took the form of the belief that her suffering could “buy” lifestreams for me, but in your case it has taken the form of wanting to awaken people who are stuck. In any case, it is basing your own peace of mind on the reactions of other people – thinking you have to save them even if they won’t change – which is unnecessary and counter-productive for any spiritual seeker.

Many others among the top ten percent of the most spiritually aware people are blinded by other aspects of this mentality, and I am using Mother Teresa’s example partly to make all of you aware that this subtle consciousness simply has to go! I want all of you to be free to BE who you are, and you cannot be who you are if you are in any way attached to saving other people. For you will then believe that you have to adapt yourself to them instead of being who you are!

The ONLY road to salvation is for each person to be the unique individual that he or she was created to be. Thus, you must BE and let be. In fact, ONLY by being yourself can you help other people, for it is in daring to express your spiritual identity in the material realm that you can inspire others – through example not talk – to be who they are! I know I talked a lot during my mission, but I also walked my talk by being who I AM. I want all of YOU to be who YOU are.

Kim, now go back to my question.

Kim: Jesus, thank you for this revelation, your Living Truth has made me free to see and surrender this. I will be very alert to any re-occurrence of this consciousness in my being!

What I see about the underlying cause of Mother Teresa’s condition is that she thought she had surrendered completely to God, but in reality she had not. Or I might say that she had surrendered to God as she saw him. She had surrendered to her image of God, but the real God is beyond ANY image, so we have to continually surrender. We must be in a state of perpetual surrender as long as we are on earth, so that we eventually surrender EVERY subtle aspect of our image of God and our sense of separation from God.

Obviously, as you just pointed out, there was something I had not surrendered, yet that was simply because I had not seen it. This actually happens on an almost daily basis—that I see something in my psychology or world view that I need to let go of because it keeps me separated from God. So it has become a way of life for me to be continually on the look-out for what I need to surrender next. Obviously, in order to see what we need to surrender, we need to be constantly expanding our understanding, which, of course, is were it is invaluable to have a teacher who is beyond duality. I think this is a big part of Mother Teresa’s condition.

It seems to me that she was not actually looking for a higher understanding with the open mind of a child because she could not even conceive of looking beyond Catholic doctrines. Her only chance of understanding her condition was to ask her spiritual advisors, and they, of course, would not look beyond doctrine either, so it became a catch-22 for her. There was nothing in Catholic doctrine that could help her understand her condition, and thus she could not overcome it. As a result she endured the most intense suffering for 50 years, while it could all have been alleviated by a turn of the dial of consciousness.

That is why I say that Mother Teresa was not actually a mystic. I see a mystic as a person who has a truly universal approach to God and spirituality, meaning that if we don’t find understanding in a particular religion, we look beyond it. I think it is a misnomer to talk about Catholic mystics, such as Saint John of the Cross. I think all true mystics – while sometimes placing themselves in the context of a particular religion – look far beyond the outer religion. They apply what you called the “key of Knowledge” and they worship God in “Spirit and in Truth.” And because Mother Teresa could not make that leap, she remained stuck.

I think her condition actually began when she – at the age of 32 – made a private vow, “I made a vow to God, binding under [pain of] mortal sin, to give God anything He may ask, ‘Not to refuse Him anything.’” In her letters she talks many times about surrendering herself fully to God and giving her all to Jesus. Based on this, I believe she thought she had actually surrendered herself fully to God, which she also says several times.

Yet there are also a number of instances where she describes how difficult for her it is to do something. For example, in the early part of her ministry, she is asked to travel to the U.S to speak in three cities. She obviously doesn’t want to go, yet she feels that God wants her to go. Despite the fact that she feels God wants her to do this, and the fact that she had vowed not to refuse God anything, she still resists going and says it was one of the hardest things she had ever done. Likewise, she says several times that God wanted her to speak to her confessors about her darkness, yet is is very hard for her to do so, even to the point where she is often unable to say anything—which I believe is a subconscious reaction of simply not wanting to speak.

So to me it seems that if she had fully surrendered to God, it should not have been hard for her to do what she believed God wanted her to do. She should simply have been flowing wherever her mission took her, being happy to fulfill God’s desires. Instead, she seems to resist many aspects of her mission, especially anything to do with appearing in public. She seems to continually struggle with doing what she feels God wants her to do, and she even asks her confessors to pray for her that Jesus will not allow her to refuse him anything—which indicates that she wants you to make decisions for her instead of taking responsibility for her own choices.

The fact that she struggled so much shows me that she had not actually surrendered to God—or at least that there was something she had not surrendered. It seems to me that while she had said that she surrendered herself to God, she was still holding on to certain mental images and expectations for how her life and mission should unfold. She was in a very subtle way putting an image upon what it meant to live a life for God, and when her expectations were not fulfilled, she had an inner conflict about doing what she felt God wanted her to do.

I know from my own life that whenever I struggle or find something difficult, it is because there is something I have not surrendered. And once I see what I need to surrender and let it go, the difficulty simply disappears and everything falls into place—both inside and outside of me.

So I believe firmly that the cause of all suffering is a lack of surrender, which leads me to conclude that Mother Teresa had not fully surrendered to God. And this is the real cause of her suffering.

One example of this is that after she received the call to her mission, she had to get the permission of her superiors. She was obviously very anxious to get started on her mission, but her superiors put her through – and wisely so, I think – quite a test of patience and surrender. Yet my point is that on one hand she was convinced that this was God’s call yet on the other she was equally convinced that the church was God’s church. She even declares that if her superiors in the church tells her to do so, she is willing to give up the call.

Yet regardless, she keeps sending them letters trying to convince them to approve her mission, and in some of these letters, she is – in my opinion – outright manipulative in trying to get them to do what she thinks God wants them to do. Again, this to me shows a conflict in her:

• If she really had surrendered herself completely to God and if she really was convinced that this was God’s call, why would she need the permission of her superiors? If the Church had not approved her mission, she could have started her mission outside the Church. In fact, I would argue that part of the path to Christhood is whether we will follow our inner directions or an outer rule (providing that we really know that our directions are genuine and not ego-based).

• On the other hand, if she really was convinced that the Church is God’s church and that her superiors represent the Lord to her (as she says), then why was she not at peace about letting them make the final decision? Why did she feel a need to push so hard to get her vision fulfilled instead of trusting that the Church would come up with what was really God’s will and do so on God’s timetable?

After reading these things, it started to occur to me that Mother Teresa seems to be a rather conflicted personality, and it is almost as if there were two persons here. Throughout the book she talks about her interior emptiness and feeling left behind and unwanted by God. For example, she says, “If only you knew what goes on within my heart. Sometimes the pain is so great that I feel as if everything will break.” Yet at another point she says, “In spite of everything that has happened these last years, there has always been perfect peace and joy in my heart.” This doesn’t sound like the same person.

So my conclusion is that there are two options I see:

• Mother Teresa was the most deeply conflicted and divided person I have yet come across. She suffered from multiple personality disorder, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. She was literally two different and opposite – even warring – personalities in the same body. This would make her a deeply divided soul, possibly a lifestream that had rebelled against God a very long time ago.

• Mother Teresa is a very mature being who volunteered to take on the fallen state of consciousness in order to help resolve it and make it easier for others to rise above it. In other words, she took on a certain state of consciousness and in doing so her outer personality was affected by it, which is what created her inner conflict and suffering. I have to say though, that if this is the case, she doesn’t seem to have overcome what she took on but remained burdened by it to her death.

In the first instance, the conflict would go to the core of her being, in the second it would be a covering and underneath it is her real being. I obviously can’t resolve which one is correct, so I am hoping you will comment on this.

Jesus: Which option do you see as most likely?

Kim: I would have to say the second one because I do sense her deep sincerity. I also see that she was willing to sacrifice everything on the outer to serve God and I don’t think a deeply divided being would have been willing to make the outer sacrifices she made or would have so obviously been fighting to stay humble despite her many public accolades.

Jesus: You are correct in that Mother Teresa is a mature lifestream that did volunteer to take on a certain state of consciousness. That is why – as I have stated before – she will not have to return to embodiment. However, she will have to go through some healing in order to free herself from the effects of the consciousness she took on. She also needs healing from her interior darkness, a condition that left scars in her being.

In fact, one of my reasons for wanting to discuss her darkness is to give those who have a reverence for Mother Teresa an opportunity to understand what she took on, so that they might realize that they have also taken on this consciousness and that Mother Teresa would love to see them actually overcome it so the planet can move forward. Her desire was to help the planet move forward and overcome this consciousness, so spiritual people could be free of the dark cloud that has been hanging over this planet for far too long.

I know that for people who are new to the teachings on this website, this might require some contemplation because it is very easy to look at Mother Teresa in her Catholic context. Yet in her higher being she simply took on this outer clothing out of a universal desire to transform this state of consciousness – this particular approach to God – from within.

Thus, in her higher being Mother Teresa is NOT a Catholic as all of us in the spiritual realm have transcended the labels you find on earth. As I have said before, you only get to heaven by transcending the graven images and mental boxes that seem so important to human beings. If you have earthly attachments, they will pull you back to earth and you cannot permanently leave this planet behind—as you do when you ascend.
