What is the subconscious?

Question: What is the subconscious and how does the ego differ from the subconscious ego?

Answer from Kim Michaels.  This answer was given during the 2026 American Webinar.

They have given many teachings on this. I also have some YouTube videos where I talk about this. I am just going to give a very short summary here. In the broadest sense, the subconscious is anything below the level of conscious awareness. And that, of course, can shift. Sometimes you can be aware of something that used to be subconscious, but also things that are so deep that for most people, they remain subconscious. The subconscious is generally also the emotional, the mental and the identity level of the mind. As the masters have explained, they are the purely physical level at the lowest vibration, then the emotional, the mental identity, and then the spiritual beyond it.

How does the ego differ from the subconscious ego? It is not really a precise question because the ego is, in most definitions of it, subconscious. In traditional psychology, you can see the ego as the personality or the sense of self. But in most spiritual philosophies, the ego is in the subconscious mind and you generally do not see it.

You can, of course, learn to see it. The masters have said that the ego is kind of like that sense of self as a separate being. It forms sort of a container, and then you have all of these subconscious or separate selves that the masters are talking about that are inside the container of the ego.

The value of that teaching is that you can come to see these selves more easily than the ego, the overall ego. It is more easy to see a specific self that has a specific belief, and therefore, you can overcome that. You become more and more free, and it also lessens the pull that the ego has on you.
