The separation of church and state

Question: Evangelical Christians in America believe God wants the US to be a promised land for their religion. The newly elected Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, has spent years working to eviscerate the separation of church and state in America. Could the ascended masters please address the principle of the separation of church and state that Saint Germain established in the founding of America and its importance in today’s American society?

Answer from the Ascended Master Saint Germain through Kim Michaels. This answer was given during the 2023 American webinar.

Well, this is something that I could give a long discourse on, which I might do at some point. But if you take Jesus’ magnificent discourse about the problems with Christianity in America, you can say that many of the leaders of the Christian religion are, as Jesus said, feeling that their control over people and over American society is slipping away. And that is why some of them are seeking to blur the separation between church and state so that their Christian religion can take over the state.

Why is there in the American Constitution the separation of church and state? Because even though many people have forgotten this or have never realized it, you can go back to 1776 and you can look at the situation as it was back then. Many of the first settlers in America came from Europe, which for a very, very long time was dominated by the Catholic church. There was no separation of church and state in the Catholic system because the church had a very deep influence on the state. But of course, the king also had an influence on the church, as you saw with Constantine being instrumental in the creation of the Catholic church as an extension of state control. It is simply that there was a desire by me, and the founding fathers saw this, to create a democratic country that could not be dominated by a religion as Europe was dominated by the Catholic church for over a thousand years. It is also a general principle. Look at the Declaration of Independence: “All men are created equal. They are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.” Meaning that the state does not have a right to override people’s rights.

And what are these rights? Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Well, part of the pursuit of happiness and liberty is that you are free to choose your religion. Why is this important? Because, contrary to what many people believe, God does not have a desire for there to be only one religion on earth. God or the ascended masters or the Christ consciousness desires people to grow. And whether people grow through that religion or the other religion is not so important. What we have seen is, over history, that those who decide to have one religion that dominates everything are the fallen beings. They are the ones who want to be in control. They are the ones who want to use religion for control purposes. God does not want to use religion to control the people. That is why God has given people free will. Therefore, from God’s perspective, God wants people to be free to choose their religion and does not want the state to impose a certain religion on people. Therefore, it is written in the Constitution that people have that right to choose their religion or choose no religion.

This is, of course, what the leaders of today’s Christian religions or churches in America cannot see, will not see. Why? Because they are either fallen beings in embodiment or their minds are taken over by fallen beings and they believe in these lies promoted by the fallen beings. They also believe, of course, that the Christian religion or, at least, their specific Christian religion is the only way for souls to be saved. But as we have explained so many times, this is not the case. What did Jesus just say in his dictation? That Christ consciousness is the only way to be saved, not an outer religion. But the fallen beings want to make it seem as if the only way to salvation is the outer religion and then they want to pervert that outer religion so it prevents people from attaining the state of consciousness that is the key to salvation. This is what they did with the Catholic church. This is how they have kept it now for seventeen centuries with the Catholic church and even all of the Protestant churches that came out of the Reformation or have been developed later, they are based on that same consciousness. They are preventing people from attaining the Christ consciousness that is the only key to salvation.
