Question: Is the traditional guru-chela relationship as described in Autobiography of a Yogi something we should seek out in today’s world? On one hand, the masters have said that we should primarily cultivate an inner connection with the ascended masters, but on the other hand, I have experienced that it can be very difficult to step outside my current perception filter without any direct external guidance. Any comments?

Well, this needs to be an individual consideration. You can take some general considerations and you can say that the traditional guru-chela relationship is typically based on the Indian model where you have a person who reaches a level of consciousness, starts teaching, he buys an ashram, and he then has people who come and stay at the ashram, help run the ashram. He might have some that finance the ashram, and he might give some events there where people come from the outside, but most of the time he is teaching or interacting with the students on a personal basis. And the advantage of this is, of course, that the teacher has time to have personal contact with the students. The disadvantage is that no matter how evolved the teacher, time and space allows him to have personal contact only with a limited number of students. Even though I had more than 12 disciples in my embodiment as Jesus, there was still a limit to how many I could interact with on a personal basis in an ongoing way.
In today’s age, there are many, many people who are ready to awaken and follow the spiritual path. And there are many more people who are ready to follow the path than there are gurus who could take on as personal students. First of all, you only have a certain limited number of what we, from the ascended realm, would call qualified gurus, and you have also a number of false gurus, or at least gurus who are not connected to the ascended realm and working with us. Given that there is a limited number of qualified gurus, many students would be attracted to the unqualified gurus. And so that is why we are focusing on providing a path that does not require you to have personal contact with a guru where we give you as much as possible so you can walk the path yourself.
From this overall perspective, you can say that the traditional Indian guru-chela relationship has been, so to speak, outrun by the success of the spiritual path or the spiritual awakening where there simply are not enough gurus to the number of students. But this is not to say that it is not still a valid model. Of course, it is when you have a qualified guru who has reached some level of higher consciousness. It does not have to be the ultimate consciousness for a guru to be valid because as we have said, when the student is ready the teacher appears, which you can turn around and say that for each level of the spiritual path, there is a guru who is qualified to teach students at that level, and if it is a valid guru, he will help them rise to a higher level where they can find a higher guru or higher teaching. Or where they can become self-sufficient and able to walk the path on their own.
If you individually feel the need to find a physical guru you should by all means look for one and use your intuition. And if you find one then make use of that guru. But do not lock yourself in the space that you have to be loyal to the outer guru and follow the outer guru for the rest of your life. Be sensitive to inner-direction that might tell you to go other places. You also should be aware as Master Moore has said “If the guru be an ant, heed him”. Any person you meet can, in a sense, be your guru at least to help you see something in yourself, and even if the person helps you see one thing, that is still valuable. Do not lock yourself in a mindset that you have to find some guru that has the outer appearance of being a guru or even the inner qualifications of being a guru because you can still learn in many other ways. You can talk to people that you can talk to and get feedback on your own psychology just as well or perhaps better than some guru could give you.
