Teaching children factual knowledge

Question: My question is on the upbringing and development of children in the modern world. In Russia, there are various courses for young children starting from three to five years old that are a very popular now. Does such early intellectual development harm the psychological and spiritual health of children? At what age would you recommend to start teaching children to write, read and count? How and when can we start giving spiritual knowledge and practices to children? The Waldorf School of pedagogy strives to develop pupils intellectual, artistic and practical skills in an integrated and holistic manner, the cultivation of pupils’ imagination and creativity is a central focus. What is your assessment of the Waldorf schools according to the Rudolph Steiner method?

 Kim: These are really two separate questions and I sense that I am not getting an answer on the second one, the Waldorf schools. But Mother Mary will comment on the first part of the question.

There are many methods in the world that are aimed at starting children to develop at a very early age. There are even some methods that were applied by many parents and teachers in the Summit Lighthouse.

You cannot give a general answer that says that this is good for all children to start very early. This is an individual matter. Some children need to have a period of childhood where they can integrate with the physical body and where they can adjust to being in physical embodiment again, perhaps have a chance to heal certain traumas from past lifetimes. For such children, it would be a burden for them if they were subjected to early learning methods, so that they are forced to go more into an intellectual learning process.

I would also like to say that even though you can theoretically teach children in the womb, and you can start in an early age, for example, with flashcards to teach them certain facts, you also have to be aware that teaching children factual knowledge is not really the highest priority from a spiritual perspective.

It is more important to be concerned about the psychology of the child. Therefore, I would say that many of the methods that are out there right now are too focused on practical, intellectual, factual knowledge. It would be much more advantageous to develop programs that were aimed at helping children heal their psychological wounds and helping identify these wounds for the parents and teachers so that they would know how to best help the individual child.

This is something that requires a high degree of sensitivity on the part of both parents and teachers or psychologists who could be trained for this specific purpose. But it is definitely something that is beginning to happen and will happen much more in the future.

We are working with a number of people around the world who are sensitive to these ideas, open to these ideas. Many of them do not know about ascended masters, but they are open to the possibility of healing children’s psychology, starting at an early age, many of them even being open to reincarnation and the potential that children can come in with severe trauma from past lives.

So this is certainly much more important than teaching children factual knowledge, especially in the computer and internet age where having factual knowledge in your mind and memory becomes less of an advantage.
