Question: Is it important to remember past lives?

It is for many people not necessary to remember who you were in a past life and what you did. It is more important to tune in to the feelings and the beliefs and resolve them without necessarily remembering the specifics. You see, the ability to forget is actually an important mechanism on a planet as dense and as violent as earth. For the vast majority of people, including spiritual people, it would be very disturbing to be able to remember your past lives because you would also remember how many times you have been hurt, killed or tortured. Drawing the veil of memory between embodiments does make it easier for most people to start afresh, to start with a childlike mind. And this is important for all.
It is important not to be overeager to remember past lives. It is also important not to reject knowledge if you need it. But there are many people who become so frantic about wanting to remember past lives that they attempt to take heaven by force, and this, in many cases, will not give you an accurate remembrance of past lives. There are many, many people who have gotten the impression that they were a certain person in a past life, and it was not accurate. This can be simply because they were tricked by demons or false teachers in the higher realms – the emotional or mental – or it can be because they tuned in to the need to overcome a certain psychological pattern that was outpictured by a certain person from the past.
You know very well that you can go into mental institutions and find more than one person who believes they were Napoleon, for example. But this is because Napoleon was, in a certain sense, an archetype that outpictured a certain psychological pattern that applies to many people.
Now, for some people it can be necessary to actually believe that they were that person in order to start looking at the pattern. Some believe they were that person and get stuck in a pattern, never doing anything about it. But for you who are spiritual people, it is important you do not get fixated on trying to remember past lives or, if you do get a remembrance from past lives, not necessarily believing that you actually were that person.
It is important for you to look at the psychology of the person, the archetypal pattern, and then see how this applies to you and how you can transcend it. You do not necessarily need the belief that you were that person, so therefore be willing to be non-attached.
Some of you have, of course, in past lives been public persons. It may be important for you to know this. But I still suggest that, by looking at the psychological pattern and working on attaining non-attachment and resolving the pattern, then you will be in a better state of mind for getting an accurate impression of whether you were that person and whether it is important for you to know this.
