Jesus’ quote on celibacy

Question: Can you explain the following quote from Matthew 19-12? “For there are some eunuchs which were so born from their mother’s womb, and there are some eunuchs which were made eunuchs of men, and there be eunuchs which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.”

Well, as everything else, words have certain limitations.

When you today in the modern world hear the word eunuchs, you are most likely thinking about these people who were attending the harems in the Arabic countries. And who were either castrated or in other ways prevented from having a sex life. And that is why they could attend to the women. What I actually refer to are those who are not sexually active and are not allowing their main thoughts and energies to be directed into sexual activity as many people in the world do.

There are some that were born without having a particularly strong sex drive. There were of course as I said some that were forced to have this by men. And then there were some who have chosen celibacy because they felt it enhanced their spiritual growth. Now I am not here saying that everybody should choose celibacy to enhance their spiritual growth. Neither am I saying as we have made clear several times that abstaining from sexual activity is not necessarily the fastest way to grow or is not a guaranteed way to grow. But you do see over time that there are some people who have come to a certain resolution in their minds that they wanted to abstain from sexual activity and focus all their energies on their spiritual growth.

It should be said though that balance is always necessary. There are those ascetics who have chosen a celibate lifestyle but forced themselves to do it. And therefore, enforcing the suppression of their sexual drives, they have actually spent as much energy on this suppressing the sex drive as they would have if they had had a balanced sex life. Again, it is not so much a matter of what you do in the physical but how much of your energies are tied up into this. You can actually have a balanced sex life without tying up your energies anymore than if you forced yourself to be celibate.

Again, balance, discernment, intuition, what is right for you. I want to make it very clear that I am not here making any general recommendations to what you should or should not do. It is an individual matter.
