How to transcend a legitimate desire

Question: Master Jesus, could you please give me some practical guidance on how to surrender and transcend a legitimate desire. I know that I cannot progress any further on my spiritual path until I am willing to surrender and transcend this legitimate desire of mine. The really tough part is that I am required to surrender and to transcend it without actually having ever experienced it in a real life. I am afraid that surrendering and transcending this desire includes but is not limited to making peace with the possibility that the manifestation of this desire of mine will not only be delayed further, but it will be denied completely for the remainder of my current embodiment. I realized that I value God so little and I am so angry when God withholds its gifts. Master Jesus, how could I possibly value God more than the gifts of God?

It is clear that many people are in a situation where they have a certain desire. It is not an unlawful desire, it is what you might call a legitimate desire. It is not a desire that harms other people. But for practical, you might say karmic reasons if you will, it cannot be fulfilled.

Let us just as an example, take a desire to live in a big affluent house, a castle. You have a desire to have a castle. There is nothing really wrong with this desire, but you can see that this would be so expensive for you to buy a castle that it is simply beyond your economic means in this lifetime.

There are two ways to go about this. If you actually read Yogananda’s book, “Autobiography of a Yogi”, you will see that at some point, his guru took him in his finer bodies to a different realm and he manifested a castle for him, because Yogananda had this desire for such a castle. By manifesting it, his master helped him overcome the desire, which would have blocked his divine plan.

Obviously, you cannot expect this to happen by us, manifesting your desires for you. What you can do is you can go into the desire in your mind. You can imagine that you have the elaborate castle you desire. You can outpicture it, you can perhaps find pictures of what you would like, draw the picture, make a model, do whatever you have to do. You can do it all in the mind perhaps, but envision yourself, really experience yourself living in that castle. How would you feel? How would it shift your consciousness? Really go through it.

The other way to deal with this is to realize—not all can do this but many can—that you cannot do everything in life. That there are many, many things on this planet that are attractive that you would enjoy doing. But you cannot do them all because it is the nature of life that you have limited time limited space, limited resources, you only have so much attention.

This messenger, for example, has throughout his life, been aware that there are many activities on earth that he could enjoy. But he has realized that he does not have the time because you cannot do everything at once. You have to make choices. It is part of life to make choices, where you select out certain things where you say: “Yes, it would be nice to do this. I have a desire to do this. But I have other desires that are more important. And I cannot do everything at once.” As the old saying goes, “You can’t have your cake and eat it too”.

There is also a limit to how many cakes you can have, or how many cakes you can eat. You all know very well that when you are sitting in front of a table with many different dishes, you might eat a little bit of this, you might eat a little bit of that, you might eat some of that, but there comes a point where your stomach is simply full. There might still be dishes you have not tasted but you know that you need to stop now because otherwise you will be sick. You have learned to therefore surrender certain desires, sublimate certain desires, just let go of them.

In terms of the anger against God, this is a slightly different issue. This goes back to past lifetimes where you have come to adopt a view of God, created by the fallen beings. That is why you are angry; you are feeling that God is withholding gifts from you but God is not withholding anything from you.

You just need to recognize the reality of the physical octave and of your own choices, both in past lives and this life. This has created some separate selves in you that you need to use our tools to come to clarity about and then resolve them because God has nothing to do with it. It is all in your own mind. That is where it must be resolved.

This is really the essence of the spiritual path. Neither God nor other people nor outer circumstances are what influences you and your state of mind. Your state of mind is influenced exclusively by the state of your mind, by what happens in your mind. This is where the key to your freedom is. This is where you can resolve things and move on. So you can look back at this and say: “Why was this so important to me? Why was this such a big deal?” You can follow the call that I said 2000 years ago: “What is that to thee? Follow thou me.” You can say: “What is that to me, I will follow Jesus, I will go higher on the spiritual path.”
