Healing psychology by using medication

Question: I have been reflecting deeply on the use of psychological or pharmaceutical medication, especially in light of the teachings from the ascended masters and Kim Michael’s perspective. At different points in my life, when my psychological state was at a certain level of consciousness, I made use of such tools. And my intuitive sense is that they can serve a purpose when used with awareness. However, I have also noticed internal selves arising around shame. Shame for needing medication at all or shame that I might be doing something wrong spiritually by relying on it. At times, I have even interpreted the teachings as suggesting that using pharmaceuticals opens us up to dark forces or prevents spiritual progress. Yet I also recognize that certain medications can promote neurogenesis, shift entrenched patterns, or support the nervous system during intense trauma work, especially when used short term or with intentionality. For example, I have struggled with insomnia while healing trauma. I use non-hormonal natural supports and invoke light regularly. But there have been pretty consistent nights now when sleep simply does not come or is easily disturbed, despite the inner work, decrees and invocations. And I sometimes feel there is a subtle undertone of: “You should be able to handle this spiritually when it comes to rest, healing and nervous system support.” My question is, can the masters offer a more nuanced understanding of pharmaceutical and psychological medication, particularly for those who may be misinterpreting the teachings in a black and white way? Is it possible that when used consciously and with inner clarity, these tools can be a valid part of someone’s path rather than a spiritual misstep?

Answer from the Ascended Master Mother Mary through Kim Michaels. This answer was given during the 2025 USA Conference.

The issue is very complicated because it depends on your individual situation and what tools, what medications, you are talking about. The medications, of course, there is a wide range that have different effects. They have different effects on different people, because you are talking about chemical, physical substances that are meant to have an effect on the psychology. But they are two different levels. Obviously, there is a connection between your brain state, or your hormonal state, and your psychological state. I am just saying it is very complicated.

Let me give a simple answer. Yes, it is possible to use such tools with awareness. But you need to be very careful about it. And you need to realize that at a certain level of the path, it may help you. But there also does come a point where you need to leave such physical means behind, unless there is a very strong, extremely unbalanced situation that you are dealing with.

There was a previous answer about antipsychotic medication. And that is a more extreme situation that requires more caution than, for example, taking something that helps you sleep. Again, individual situations require individual considerations. But I will say this, that at the higher levels of the path, you become less and less needing to use physical material tools. There can also come a point where using these tools becomes a crutch. It is just easier than to work on the psychology.

Now again, if you cannot sleep, that obviously is not good. Therefore, in the short run, it can be okay to use certain tools to deal with certain conditions. I am not just talking about sleep here. But nevertheless, there comes a point where you need to become less dependent on this. Because as long as you need the tool, there is something in the psychology you have not resolved. You need to be careful that you are not using a chemical substance as a way to mask the deeper symptoms that you have not dealt with.

I know I am not giving you a precise answer. But you cannot give a precise answer to this because it is so individual. If you intuitively feel that this does something for you, use it. But keep your intuition open and as neutral as possible so that you can feel when it is time to move on from these physical tools.
