Capitalism vs. free enterprise

Question: While I concur that there are certain people and corporations that are abusive and monopolistic within the capitalist system, these people and corporations exist within every economic system that humans have devised. Capitalism has enabled many immigrants to arrive with nothing and raise themselves up to prosperity within a single lifetime. I do not see capitalism as a problem. I see people that desire control over the material world and other people to be the problem. Am I missing something in this line of thought?

Well, it depends on how you define capitalism. As I have expounded upon several times before, there are many, many people, especially in America, who believe that capitalism and free enterprise are the same thing. But they are not. This is a very common misunderstanding. Capitalism is an economic system. And, as with any economic system, it is created by the elite and it has the purpose of giving the elite a privileged position. Even communism is a system created by the elite to give the elite a privileged position in society. What enables immigrants to come into a country and raise themselves up in one lifetime is free enterprise or at least that the enterprise is as free as possible. The ultimate outcome of capitalism is monopoly, where one corporation owns all means of production, and in such a system there is no freedom for people to do better. They will have to join the corporate machine and be satisfied with whatever station they are given. The ability to transcend yourself and do well is the result of a free economy. And free enterprise is not an economic system, it is a free economy.

If you define capitalism the way I do, then this is what you are missing. If you define capitalism in the common way, well then you can continue to argue that free enterprise and capitalism are the same thing and I really do not have any response to that. If people have not seen that there is a tendency towards larger and larger corporations and that the ultimate outcome of this is that one corporation owns and controls everything, then there is no argument that can make them see what they are not willing to see. And that is why you find so many people out there, especially in America, who believe that capitalism is the greatest economic system and that capitalism won over communism. You are, of course, right that the problem is not so much the system as it is the people. But as I have said, capitalism is a system created by the very people who want to take advantage of others, who want to force themselves into a privileged position and want to use force to keep it, thereby keeping other people down and stealing the value of the people’s labor.

It is not the kind of economy that is survivable in the Golden Age. And that is why you will see that there will be situations where the capitalist economy, and the greed that is the hallmark of it, will create these major economic problems and downturns, major economic crises, like the 2008 financial crisis, like crashes in the real estate market, crashes in financial instruments and many other crises that will come up until democratic countries, democratic governments, decide that they can no longer allow a small elite to run the economy, to run the money system, to run the financial system. But it needs to be an economy that is of the people, by the people and for the people.
