Question: During college, I picked the wrong major that was too stressful and experienced dating troubles. After graduating from college, I experienced some episodes of psychosis. What causes psychosis? The physical brain gets messed up, but does psychosis also involve the emotional, mental, and identity bodies?
Answer from the Ascended Master Mother Mary through Kim Michaels. This answer was given during the 2025 USA Conference.
Any psychological condition involves all of the four lower bodies. For that matter, you could say any condition on Earth involves all four levels of the material universe and of the mind. It is just that science, because of the materialistic paradigm, is not willing to look beyond the purely physical. Therefore, they have to find an explanation in the brain and a remedy that works on the brain.
Psychosis, as it is currently diagnosed, can really be understood as your emotional, mental, and identity body being too open. You do not have enough discernment to filter the impulses coming to you from the world and from the spiritual realm. You get overwhelmed and cannot function in your normal life because either your mind is very scattered, or you are attuned to some different reality or realm. Therefore, you cannot really take your physical life seriously; you cannot really engage in life and have to withdraw because “it is all too much” or “it seems unreal.”
Because science, again, does not acknowledge anything beyond, they have to look at this as some kind of abnormality. You can say that the basis for this is really sensitivity, but as with everything else, things can become unbalanced so that you are too sensitive.
There are many people who have attempted to have spiritual experiences and connect to something, whether it be in the emotional, mental, identity, or spiritual realm. They have succeeded in connecting to something, but their connection has been unfiltered and unbalanced, so they have been overwhelmed by the impressions they get. This primarily relates to connecting to the three lower realms, because we of the ascended masters, when we see someone is unbalanced, will withdraw from them so as not to magnify the condition. But the forces in the identity, mental, or emotional realm will not withdraw; they will take as much energy from you as you will allow them to take.
This is one reason why you can say it is actually a good thing to be able to connect to something beyond the physical realm. However, if it becomes too overwhelming and you cannot function in your daily life, it can impact your Divine plan, because your Divine plan is to do something at the physical level, not to get out of here while you are still in embodiment. Your Divine plan may involve your ascension eventually, but in order to qualify for your ascension, you have to be able to function in daily life. There are people who are so eager to have spiritual experiences that they ignore everyday life, and that is an unbalanced approach to spirituality.
The other form of sensitivity you can have is that you are too sensitive, not to something higher than you, but to something lower: lower consciousness, the astral plane, or dark forces that have too much of an inroad into your consciousness. Again, this is because you are sensitive without having a filter.
All that materialistic science can do is to reason that “this is abnormal brain activity, the brain is running too fast.” So, if they slow it down with medication, then the person can at least function in their daily lives. But this, of course, is not the ultimate solution, although it can be necessary for some people.
You can achieve a lot by invoking spiritual protection, by invoking Astrea to cut you free. But ultimately, you need to look at the psychology of what your beliefs are about yourself, about other realms, about the possibility of connecting. What are your beliefs about your daily life? Do you find your daily life too overwhelming, so you are seeking an escape? Is your daily life, for example, too stressful, too much for you to handle? Have you taken on too much? You might need to use the wisdom of the Mother to say: “I am going to slow down; I am going to select out certain activities that are too much for me and focus more narrowly.” But ultimately, you need to resolve the psychology that allows these other forces to pull on you.
This also revolves around making a decision. For example, this messenger has explained how when he was 19 years old, he had an out-of-body experience where he was taken out of his body, went into a golden light, and then came back into his body with great force. He interpreted this to mean that he is not meant to have spiritual experiences while he is in a physical body; he is meant to do something in this world and therefore focus on this world instead of seeking to get away from this world or get some higher experience. You also need to consider whether you have decided to escape because everyday life seems too overwhelming.
The rest of the question revolves around whether the person can stop taking anti-psychotic medication at some point because there are side effects, and the question is also whether this impacts the person’s ability to tune in.
The effect of the medication is to slow down brain activity. But you see, you are not connecting to your higher self and your ascended masters through the brain; you are connecting by going beyond the brain. From a theoretical perspective, the medication does not hinder your ability to do this, but it can have the effect of lowering your ability to disconnect from the brain, to go beyond the brain.
But as I just said, it could be that part of the problem is that you want to go beyond the physical; you want to get away from the physical, and you are hoping for some kind of escape. This is again a matter of looking at the psychology. If you came to a point where you had resolved the psychology and you had increased your discernment, then it is possible to get off the medication. But be very careful here; I am not telling you to do this right now. You need to look at this very carefully; you need to consult a physician; you need to gradually step down the medication over a period of time and see what the effects are on your ability to function in daily life.
What I am really saying here is that you need to focus on your ability to function in life and not impair that ability, whether it is through medication or through unbalanced spiritual activity. I am talking in general, of course. There is a balance to be found here, and there are many spiritual people who are approaching spirituality in an unbalanced way that can lead to various symptoms. Again, we can say that psychosis is really an unbalanced reaction to life, and when you find balance, you will no longer need the medication. But you have to be careful and not think you have that balance before you have resolved enough psychology. I think that covers it.
