Overcoming illusions using other spiritual traditions

Question: To dissolve the separate self, we need to discover the belief on which it is based and find the right wording. As Mother Mary said, how do other spiritual traditions that do not have teachings about the separate selves handle this task? For example, how does this happen in meditation?

Answer from the Ascended Master Mother Mary through Kim Michaels. This answer was given during the 2024 New Year webinar

Well, naturally, the only way you can ascend from earth is to discover your separate selves and resolve them. People have ascended long before we have given this teaching. What we have done with our teachings on this is to make it easier for people. Because now they know what they are looking for and they can look for it consciously. What has happened, of course, before this teaching was given was that people have done it without being so conscious of what they were doing. But, of course, you can go back to previous times before recorded history and there have been many teachings that used the same ideas and the same tools that we have given you now.

This can happen in many ways. In meditation, many people at least who are aware of this will pay some attention to what thoughts come up in meditation. And if you have a spiritual teaching that relates to somehow transcending something in your own psychology, then you can look at what comes up, come to see it, whether you call it a self or not does not matter. You come to see some kind of belief, some kind of illusion.

This can happen, of course, in many other ways. It can happen in ordinary life situations. It can happen as a result of therapy. Many times people in therapy can come to see a limiting belief and give it up. It can happen as a result of studying spiritual teachings. What we have attempted to do is to give you a more systematic conscious procedure for doing this. But it really is just a matter of coming to see a belief, seeing that it limits you, seeing that it is based on a certain illusion. Many of you have done this throughout your lives. This messenger has done it since childhood without being aware of what he was doing, without having a conscious procedure to follow. It has just happened.

And if you look back in past lifetimes, most of the people who are spiritual today, they have been doing introspection, monitoring themselves, monitoring their state of mind, monitoring their beliefs. All mystical teachings basically are based on the central concept that you have to overcome illusions. You have to go beyond Maya. You find this in the East, Zen Buddhism, other forms of Buddhism, some forms of Hindu mysticism, Sufi mysticism, Western mysticism, Christian mysticism. You have this idea of monitoring yourself, your thoughts, your beliefs, your feelings, and resolving some illusion in your mind, freeing yourself from the illusion. It is not in any way so that this is the only way to do it, but it is one way that is a natural consequence of the previous teachings we have given about psychology.
