The Ten Commandments

Question: I have heard that the Ten Commandments and the laws for the Israelites received by Moses were contaminated by lower forces. The Ten Commandments seem to be of a lower vibration, such as God being a jealous God, and most of the commandments beginning with, Thou shalt not. The laws in Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy helped the Israelites survive, but they also seem a bit controlling. Can the ascended masters explain?

Answer from the Ascended Master Jesus through Kim Michaels. This answer was given during the 2025 USA Conference.

Well, we have said, in previous dispensations, that you take the story of Moses going to the mountain, receiving the laws from God, then coming down again and seeing that the Israelites had created the golden calf and were worshiping it. In his anger, he smashed the tablets. And then he went up again, and, it was explained previously that he received a different set of commandments adapted to the lower consciousness of the people that they had demonstrated by creating the idol. And there is something to this.

Again, you cannot take it literally, but the symbolism is that even a law given from a higher source is adapted to the level of consciousness of the people. Therefore, when you take the Bible literally and say: “Oh, but the Ten Commandments came from God, it must be the highest possible law that could be given”—you are misunderstanding the original intention. The Ten Commandments were adapted to people in a fairly low self-centered consciousness, a clearly dualistic state of consciousness. And it was meant to serve as some guideline to get them out of that To, so to speak, minimize the karma they were making in their dualistic approach to life so that they could begin to climb and therefore, eventually receive a higher law, which is what I came to deliver in my teachings, especially the Sermon on the Mount.

And clearly, as we have said, if you compare the image of God in the Old Testament with the image of God that I gave, they are incompatible. The angry, judgmental God versus the loving father figure, they are just not compatible. Now, in terms of the older laws given in the Old Testament, yes, they were influenced by lower forces, because the Israelites were in such a low state of consciousness based on the belief that they were God’s chosen people. This, of course, did not come from a higher source. It came from the fallen beings who used it as another way to divide people. What better way to create a division than to make one tribe in the Middle East believe they are God’s chosen people of the superior God of the universe, and therefore, all others are lower than them. And therefore, they have a right to go in and slaughter the men, women, and children who live on the land that the Israelites want, even saying that: “Oh, God commanded us to do it, so it was okay.” This clearly cannot be the superior God of the universe.

Let us look at the Ten Commandments, and there is a symbolism there, especially in the first two commandments. “Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not take unto thyself any graven image.” It is not really that God is a jealous God, but it is just that, in the duality consciousness, you are creating false gods, and that keeps you trapped and bound to these false gods. The only way to transcend that is to always reach beyond, where you seek to have no gods before the God that is beyond duality. And therefore, you do not take unto yourself any graven image, and it does not mean an idol carved of stone or a golden calf. It means a mental image based on the dualistic consciousness, where, as we have said during this conference, you look at conditions as they are, and you project from your level up.

As we have said, the Israelites projected their own image of the angry man upon God in heaven. That is the deeper symbolism there. You can also say that even the concept of a “law” is obviously for people at a lower state of consciousness. Because when you transcend duality and connect to the Christ mind, you see that you came out of the One mind, but everybody else came out of the One mind, so you are all connected in what we call now the interdependent unfolding. Meaning, that if you harm your brother, you are harming yourself. And therefore, you do not need a law to tell you, thou shalt not do this or that. You just naturally do not do it, because you do not want to harm yourself. There are a few exceptions, men who are too stupid to see that they are harming themselves, but nevertheless you get the general idea.
