The average number of separate selves

Question: What is the average medium number of separate selves for the 8 billion lifestreams currently embodied on earth?

Answer from the Ascended Master Mother Mary through Kim Michaels. This answer was given during the 2024 Chicago Conference.

You do not want to know. On a more serious note, instead of talking about the average number of selves, let us talk about the average person. Because the average person who is not walking a spiritual path, and who perhaps lifetimes after lifetimes are caught in reactionary patterns thereby creating more selves, they can have literally thousands of subconscious selves. Some of them are, of course, more superficial, and therefore, would be easier to overcome if they were willing to look at themselves.

But the problem is that when people create a certain amount of these deeper selves where they have basically a negative attitude to life, they go into a victim consciousness where they feel powerless to change their lives, and therefore, they can only have a reactionary approach to life. And, of course, every time you get disappointed or traumatized by life, you create more separate selves to cover this over and to give yourself an excuse for why you are not looking at the beam in your own eye. You are always projecting out, and so you create separate selves to project out even more, and that is why you see some people who have gotten themselves into a situation where they feel victimized by life itself. They feel that other people are just out to get them or they are not doing what they want them to do so they are constantly looking, subconsciously of course, they are constantly looking for the next disappointment, and they deal with it by creating more selves. You are looking at a very high number of selves for many people.

Now, most people who are on the spiritual path, you did not find the spiritual path in this lifetime. You have been doing work on yourself. You may not have called it the spiritual path. It may not have been in an outer spiritual teaching but you have been doing work on yourself for lifetimes so you have reduced the number of selves because even if you do not have the concept of the separate selves, once you are willing to look at yourself, your own reactions, and you are willing to look at situations and say: “Well, how can I change myself in order to improve my life?”, then you will start reducing the number of selves. You may not consciously be aware that this is a self but you can still have this reaction where you see something in yourself and you realize it is actually hurting yourself, and you decide that you do not want to do it anymore, and this can cause some of these selves to be dissolved. Obviously, when you have the teaching you can do this much more quickly, and you can do it more consciously but you have all made progress even in this lifetime before you found the teachings by observing yourself, looking at your reactions and being willing to change yourself instead of always projecting that it is other people or the universe that needs to change.

I know that some of you will want me to put a number: “Well, how many selves do I have?”, but it just is not constructive to look at it that way because, quite frankly, for most of you if you knew how many selves you have left, it would be discouraging, and we do not want to discourage you because it is not that you have to take one self at a time and another self and another self. Many times, selves are linked so when you see a certain reactionary pattern in yourself, you can overcome a number of selves all at once, and if you are willing to use the tools we have talked about for dealing with the birth trauma, getting to some of these deeper selves, then you can very quickly unravel a number of these selves that are sort of second ranking selves that came off of a bigger trauma and then they were created after. Once you get rid of that bigger trauma, that original self, you can very quickly unravel the others. That is why it is not constructive even to know how many selves you have because it is not a linear process to get rid of them. It is often a process that goes in some big leaps where you suddenly overcome the one that is holding the others and now it becomes easier to overcome the others.

This means that you cannot set up a linear timeline and say: “Oh yeah, if you have a hundred selves it is going to take 20 years to overcome them.” It can be done much more quickly when you use the tools and you are willing to look at yourself.
