Non-attachment vs apathy

Question: Question for Gautama Buddha or any other master. Could you please address the difference between non-attachment, apathy and a neutral state of consciousness?

Answer from Ascended Gautama Buddha through Kim Michaels. This answer was given during the 2023 Easter Webinar.

Well, non-attachment is just another word for a neutral state of consciousness. What does it mean to be neutral? It means there is nothing that can pull you in any direction. You can make choices to focus your attention in certain directions but there is nothing that pulls you. Why does nothing pull you? Because you do not have an attachment. Why do you not have an attachment? Because you do not have a separate self, a subconscious self that wants a specific outcome or wants to avoid something on earth. Apathy is, of course, when you are passive, your mind is passive.

Perhaps we should step back a little bit and look at what I was saying 2,500 years ago, what Jesus was saying 2,000 years ago and what we are saying today. It is true that when you look at, especially the teachings given 2,500 years ago through my incarnation as Gautama Buddha, there are some Buddhists that have interpreted that if you achieve this non-attachment, this bliss, samadhi, nirvana whatever they call it, you basically become apathetic. You do not care about anything on earth. There is nothing you want to do and therefore you withdraw from society and sit in a monastery or a cave and meditate on God because you do not care about anything in the world. This is a misinterpretation of what I taught, what Jesus taught, what we are teaching today.

You can basically say, you are a spiritual being, your I AM Presence is a spiritual being. Your I AM Presence is in the ascended realm or rather it is not an ascended master but it is certainly in the spiritual realm, so your I AM Presence can experience the spiritual realm. Why would it then send a part of itself, the Conscious You, into a world of form specifically on a planet like earth. Why?

Well, the I AM Presence did not send you into the world to have a spiritual experience because it can have that in the spiritual realm, so it sent you into the world to experience the world. But how are you experiencing the world if you are sitting in a cave in the Himalayas meditating on God and ignoring the world? This is not why you exist, why you are in the world. You are in the world to have experiences which can include doing things, but you are certainly active in the world. If the I AM Presence did not want to experience the world, why bother having a part of itself in a physical body? Withdraw that part and focus on the growth in the spiritual realm, which, of course, is what you do after the ascension, but nevertheless you see my point.

The purpose of being in a physical embodiment is to be part of the interdependent originations that the world is. You have experiences, you do things, you show an example to other people that you can overcome the attachment to the world, therefore you can be in the world and you can still be at peace. How do you be in the world and still be at peace? By overcoming your attachments, going into a neutral state of mind.

But neutral does not mean that you are not doing anything. You can participate in an outer activity while being in a neutral state of mind. It just means that you have a different experience of it. You can actually enjoy it because when you are in an attached state of mind you cannot actually enjoy participating in an activity because you are always focused on an outcome. Until the outcome is known, you cannot really enjoy the activity. It is the good old saying that it is not the destination but the journey, it is not the result but the process. When you go into a neutral state of mind, you can enjoy the process of being in embodiment, regardless of the outer results that are achieved or not achieved. You are not in one of these dramas of what should or should not happen or one of these epic dramas of what should or should not happen in the world. But you are not apathetic, you are not inactive, you are not just sitting there doing nothing.
