The issue of African Americans and freedom of speech

Question: Why did Colin Kaepernick’s kneeling at the National Football League games stir up the nation and become a dividing issue? [Colin Kaepernick was an NFL football player, an African American, and during the national anthem he knelt on one knee instead of standing, in protest of how African Americans are treated in America. It caused a great deal of dissention, not only in the NFL but also in the United States at large.]

Answer from the Ascended Master Mother Mary through Kim Michaels. This answer was given at a conference in Albuquerque (USA) in 2018.

Well it caused the big stir because there are so many people who are in black-and-white thinking. They reacted strongly to this because they have a very black-and-white view of what it means to be an American, what it means to be a patriot. They believe you have to respect certain institutions in America and behave a certain way. We are not, from the ascended perspective, really evaluating this action other than to say it was obviously valuable in stirring something up. We’re not saying we inspired him to do this but the fact that he did it obviously showed how unbalanced some people are in black-and-white thinking.

You can say as a clear fact that if you are a nation dedicated to freedom of speech, you have to give people freedom to say anything they want. Some have said about burning the American flag that while they do not agree with burning the American flag, they are allowing this because they’re dedicated to freedom of speech. That attitude is necessary in a country that is based on freedom of speech. The moment you start restricting freedom of speech, you are on a slide and very, very soon, before you know it, the fallen beings have manipulated the situation to where there are some very severe restrictions on what people can say and not say.

You understand my beloved, that in a country where the government is physically restricting people’s freedom of speech—by restricting the press, by limiting their internet access, whatever you see going on in the world today in countries like Russia and China and the Middle Eastern nations—there you have a physical restriction of speech and the fallen beings love this. In a free democracy they cannot do this through physical measures but it doesn’t mean they give up. They try to restrict freedom of speech by restricting what people are willing to say, what they feel they can say, by creating these restrictions in the mind where they, for a variety of reasons, feel they can’t say something.

The fact of the matter is that if you can’t talk about a certain problem, you can’t resolve it. Obviously my beloved, there has not in this nation been a free, open discourse about the plight of African Americans. They have not had freedom of speech in the sense that there has not been a public environment where they felt they could freely speak. They have not felt that anybody was willing to listen to them. There has in fact, not been a willingness in America to open the debate, the issue of African Americans and the whole history of slavery and how to move beyond it. This is hanging as a great burden over America; it is one of the things that prevents America from moving forward.

It is a bigger issue that isn’t just centered on African Americans, but on how different groups in America deal with each other. So I will let Saint Germain comment further on that. It’s obvious that this person was not being disrespectful towards the flag or the national anthem but he felt up against the wall with no other way to speak out so he decided to do this. It obviously was effective because it, so to speak, got everybody out of their seats. The problem is that getting people out of their seats doesn’t necessarily help. They just immediately go into that black-and-white reaction. Really, for things to move forward it takes the more balanced people to become aware of the problem with the black-and-white reaction and demand a different form of public discourse. This would mean that African Americans would be more free to speak out and would feel that they would be heard instead of rejected beforehand.
