The technique of Vipassana meditation

Question: Twenty-six hundred years ago Gautama Buddha invented the technique of Vipassana meditation. Any comment regarding it in the modern western world?

Answer from the Ascended Master Gautama Buddha through Kim Michaels. This answer was given at a conference in Albuquerque (USA) in 2018.

My beloved, I didn’t so much invent it as receive it from a higher realm, from the ascended masters. We didn’t have the concept of ascended masters back then and the ascended masters did not feel that it was time to give that concept. So naturally the Buddhists think that I came up with this, that I invented it. In terms of its relevance in the modern western world, well, for some people it may be relevant because they are, from past lives, used to being in the Buddhist tradition. But we have evaluated that in the modern western world it was more constructive for people to have an outgoing technique – the invocations, the decrees. It kind of corresponds with the western mindset which is more focused on results, more focused on doing things. Therefore many westerners are not as internally focused, not as predisposed to do meditation , not as patient sitting for long times, are examples and they need to feel that they are doing something actively. Again, on an individual level if people feel this is relevant for them, they can certainly use it but in terms of having a major impact on the western world, I do not evaluate that this is a possibility today. There are other tools that we give today that are more relevant for the western world. Naturally you need to be aware, as you all are, of the need for progressive revelation, so in general, something that was given 2,600 years ago should not be interpreted to have eternal validity on a planet that changes as quickly as earth. This isn't to say that there aren’t certain universal ideas that are relevant in any age. In a sense you could say that the ideas we are expressing today as ascended masters are the same that have been expressed in many previous ages but they are always expressed in a different context that makes them more relevant, more applicable, for the people in a certain age.
