Christ consciousness and a sexual relationship

TOPICS: What it means to attain Christ consciousness - nothing can be more important than your relationship with God - overcome human sexuality - having a free choice concerning sex - normal to have children and then focus more on spiritual activities - sex becomes a non-issue - union with a partner can facilitate union with spiritual self - the life-force and sex - unconscious co-creation is what drives evolution - conscious co-creation -

Question: My question concerns human sexuality. I have been on the spiritual path for some time and until this past year had thought that I had moved beyond my sexual nature. However, I met someone that I feel connected to on every level, including physical sexual desire, but certainly not limited to that. What happened? The feeling is more of an urge to merge in union with this person. The entire experience made me feel more alive. I had thought that sexual love used appropriately was a gift from God. However you have indicated in another answer that God did not create human sexuality, that it only appeared after the "fall". Why is it then that we are created with our sexual organs? Paramahansa Yogananda indicates in his book "The Second Coming of Christ" that physical sexual attraction was the "original sin", I know from your website that this is not your view, yet he is now an ascended Master, as you stated elsewhere. It seems all of nature is imbued with a Life force that includes a reproductive/sexual nature - plants, trees, flowers, the entire animal kingdom, and all of nature was created by God. You stated that to fully rise above the dualistic mind, we must leave behind all human sexuality. Does this mean that we cannot attain Christhood as long as we have a loving relationship with a mate, perhaps a lifestream mate or even a twin flame, as long as our relationship with them has a sexual component? I'm really struggling with this, and would appreciate any clarity you can bring to this topic. Thank you.

Answer from ascended master Jesus through Kim Michaels:

Thank you for asking for clarification concerning a topic that can be confusing for many spiritual seekers and that has created much unnecessary guilt and frustration. Let me go to the heart of your question namely whether one can manifest Christ consciousness while having a relationship that involves sex. What is Christ consciousness? The highest form of Christ consciousness is a sense of oneness with your I AM Presence, oneness with God. This allows you to say, “I and my Father are one.”

As I explain throughout my website, LINK the process of attaining Christ consciousness is a process whereby you replace your mortal sense of identity with the correct sense that you are an immortal spiritual being. What will it take to achieve this change in identity? You will have to let the old sense of identity die incrementally, as you gradually put on the new sense of identity. Paul said, “I die daily” (1Co 15:31), and he also said:

22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. (Ephesians, Chapter 4)

So the key to attaining Christ consciousness is to let the old sense of identity die. This is what I talked about when I said:

For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. (Matthew 16:25)

Obviously, I am not hereby saying that you have to physically die before you can attain Christ consciousness. What has to die is your human, dualistic, mortal sense of identity, and this sense of self is built from “the things of this world.” So before you can let a part of this identity die, you must let go of your attachment to whatever “thing” in this world caused you to build that sense of identity.

Take note of the all-important distinction. You don’t have to lose your physical life to attain Christ consciousness, but you have to be willing to lose it. In other words, to attain union with God, there cannot be anything in this world that is more important to you than union with God, including your physical life.

When you transfer this to the topic of sexuality, you see that you don’t have to lose all sexuality in order to attain Christ consciousness, but you have to be willing to lose it. However, in order to attain this state of non-attachment concerning sexuality, you do have to overcome what we might call human sexuality. Human sexuality springs from the physical body and the dualistic mind. It causes you to see yourself as a sexual being who simply cannot live without sex. In essence, you think that without sexuality, you cannot be complete or whole.

When you attain Christ consciousness, you become whole and self-sufficient. In other words, you rise above all sense that you need anything or anyone outside yourself in order to be whole. Obviously, this includes a sexual partner or even a partner in a loving relationship. In fact, it even includes your so-called twin flame or soul mates. When you walk through the gate and become an ascended being, you must walk alone. As long as you think you cannot be whole without something or someone from outside yourself, you cannot walk through that narrow gate.

My point is that to attain Christ consciousness, you must overcome all attachments to anything in this world, meaning that you will not let anything stand between you and God. You will have no other God’s before the one true God. Once you have attained this non-attachment to a particular aspect of life, you do not necessarily have to abstain from that activity. In other words, it is possible to achieve non-attachment to sex – meaning freedom from human sexuality – and continue to have sex without having it detract from your growth toward Christhood. The key is to attain non-attachment.

One might say that before you achieve non-attachment, you cannot make a free choice concerning whether or not to have sex. You are compelled to have it by the body, the dualistic mind and numerous outside forces. When you rise above these lower urges, you will be in a position to make a free choice. Many spiritual seekers do choose celibacy after that point, but there is no absolute law saying you have to.

Let me sketch a common scenario. Many lifestreams come into embodiment with an intuitive knowing that having children is part of their divine plan. They start a family and live with a partner in a normal sexual relationship. Obviously, having children is a big commitment, and it will take your time away from certain spiritual activities. Yet having the children is still very much part of your life’s plan, and therefore it does help you on your path to Christhood. As the children grow up, your time is freed up to focus more on the spiritual path. And as they grow older, many people naturally feel their sexual desires begin to fade away. These people do not forcefully suppress their desires, they simply allow them to be replaced by a desire to use time and energy on certain spiritual activities.

Another scenario is that a lifestream can go through a period of focusing on spiritual activities, and in so doing it can achieve non-attachment to sex. For some this becomes a lifelong celibacy, but others eventually meet a person for which they feel a deeper spiritual love than the typical human relationship. There is nothing wrong with such a person having sex, as long as the person stays on guard and does not allow himself or herself to become attached to having sex.

Life revolves around your free will. There is no standard for how a Christed being should live his or her life. So a person who has attained some degree of Christhood has a right to chose certain activities that are not normally considered spiritual. This is acceptable, as long as the person realizes that while you are in embodiment, it is possible to become attached and thereby slide away from Christhood. In other words, as long as you are in a physical body your spiritual attainment is not permanent and should not be taken for granted.

My point is that after you attain non-attachment to sex, you have a right to choose to have a sexual relationship. This will not detract from your path to Christhood—as long as you remain non-attached. Remaining non-attached means that you never feel you have to have sex or that you are unwhole if you don’t get it. One might say that sex has become a non-issue. You are always balanced and harmonious, whether or not you have sex. If you don’t have a partner, you live happily without sex. If you do have a partner, you don’t get upset if that partner is not in the mood.

You mention Yogananda’s writings, and in “Autobiography of a Yogi” there is a profound example of what I am talking about. The Guru Lahiri Mahasaya was married for many years and had normal sexual relations with his wife, even though he had attained Christ consciousness. One day, his wife realizes her husband is a spiritual master, and she asks to become his disciple. From that point their sexual relations stopped by the consent of both parties. So here is a Christed being who had sexual relations to fulfill the needs of his wife. Whether he had sex or not was a non-issue to him—yet that did not stop him from enjoying the act of satisfying his wife. When their relationship moved into a new phase, he gave up sex with no effort whatsoever.

Let me now comment on some of your specific questions:

I have been on the spiritual path for some time and until this past year had thought that I had moved beyond my sexual nature. However, I met someone that I feel connected to on every level, including physical sexual desire, but certainly not limited to that. What happened? The feeling is more of an urge to merge in union with this person. The entire experience made me feel more alive.

This fits the scenario I described above. The desire for union with your partner is an important sign that you are nonattached to human sexuality. Yet be aware that any relationship can cause you to slide back into attachment. In fact, as you climb the spiritual path, it is natural that you magnetize to you your twin flame or soul mates. This does not necessarily mean that you have to have sexual relations with them. If you do, be aware that there is a subtle challenge in such a relationship. As I said, the final step on the path must be taken alone. So be careful not to develop an attachment to your partner thinking that you are not whole without him or her.

I had thought that sexual love used appropriately was a gift from God.

Many lifestreams have become trapped in a state of mind where they are very self-centered. Sexual love used with non-attachment and an unselfish desire for spiritual union with your partner – rather than bodily or emotional gratification – can help your lifestream look beyond the lower self. By becoming more focused on doing something for others rather than perpetual self-gratification, you can indeed make progress toward overcoming the lower self.

This can make it easier for the lifestream to unite with its Christ self and I AM Presence. Yet this is true only as long as the lifestream does not develop an attachment to sex or its partner. Sex must be seen as a means to an end, and not as an end in itself. And there will come a day where, in order to climb higher on the spiritual path, you have to leave behind any attachment to sex.

However you have indicated in another answer that God did not create human sexuality, that it only appeared after the "fall". Why is it then that we are created with our sexual organs?

Originally, procreation was not a mechanical process. It was a creative process that required two lifestreams to come together in a perfectly balanced and unselfish union. After a number of lifestreams fell into the lower state of consciousness, they could no longer procreate this way. Their spiritual bodies were now lowered in vibration until they attained the density you see today. The dense bodies that we today call physical bodies must have sexual organs in order to procreate. Thus, the sexual organs serve the purpose of the long-term survival of the race. And lifestreams need such bodies until they transcend the lower consciousness.

Paramahansa Yogananda indicates in his book "The Second Coming of Christ" that physical sexual attraction was the "original sin", I know from your website that this is not your view, yet he is now an ascended Master, as you stated elsewhere.

The fact that someone is now an ascended master does not mean that everything the person said while on earth reflected the highest possible understanding. I said many things in my last embodiment that I would have said differently today—especially given my knowledge of how people have misinterpreted most of my statements.

It seems all of nature is imbued with a Life force that includes a reproductive/sexual nature - plants, trees, flowers, the entire animal kingdom, and all of nature was created by God.

You are making an assumption here that is understandable but nevertheless not true. As Mother Mary explains in her discourse, everything is created from the expanding force of God, expressed as God's desire to become more. The life force is the drive to become more, to multiply your divine nature (not simply multiplying in a physical sense). The life force can be diverted into the drive for procreation, but the sexual expression of the drive to procreate is not the highest possible expression of the life force.

Everything on earth has been affected by the density of human consciousness. Thus virtually nothing on this planet is in complete alignment with the original design and vision of the Elohim. Some aspects of life on earth are closer to that design than others, and some are completely out of touch. For example, the Elohim did not create venomous animals or insects, and they did not create harmful bacteria or viruses.

The reality is that there are two processes of creation that are affecting planet earth. One is what I like to call unconscious co-creation, which is what science calls the process of evolution. This is the process whereby human beings co-create without understanding what they are doing. Thus, they do not realize that they have created the imperfect conditions on this planet and that such conditions are simply visible manifestations of what is going on in their own subconscious and unconscious minds. They either think everything on earth was created by God or that it appeared as a result of an evolutionary process guided by chance.

The other process is conscious co-creation, where people attain a degree of Christ consciousness that allows them to consciously create within the framework of God's laws and God's vision. The challenge in this age is that the spiritual people on earth need to move away from unconscious and into conscious co-creation.
